“Apple gave us Siri, Microsoft gave us Cortana, Amazon gave us Alexa, Google gave us, um, Google, and now Samsung has officially introduced its new AI-powered assistant to the world,” Paul Sawers reports for VentureBeat.
“After months of speculation that its new mobile assistant would be called Bixby, Samsung has now confirmed that Bixby is indeed the name of the assistant, which the company says is “fundamentally different” from the myriad voice-powered assistants already out there,” Sawers reports. “Samsung says Bixby differs from the competition in that it will be able to support ‘almost’ every task the app is capable of through through the touchscreen.”
“We already knew that Samsung is preparing for a March 29 launch of its next flagship phone, which will unsurprisingly be called the Galaxy S8, and we reported back in January that Bixby would likely have a dedicated button on the side of the device,” Sawers reports. “Samsung has now confirmed that to be the case, as is seeks to make enlisting the assistant’s help as frictionless as possible.”

If so, they’ve got Apple beat. Can Bixby turn off Notifications for apps when you ask it? Cause Siri sure as hell can’t.

The Bixby technology came from the acquisition of Viv, which was founded by the creators of Siri after they left Apple. That does not mean it is truly any better than Siri, but I suspect that the underlying tech is on the same level as Siri.
If I remember correctly when Siri was brought into iPhone it was lobotimized from using its full capabilities due to Apple’s Security Policies. If Bixby not only retains all functions from the original underlying tech and adds to it, Siri will seem like the black sheep relative rather than the reverse.

Oh great. So the next Samsung ‘smart’phone catastrophe will be Drop Gate because they’re impossible to hold.
I hope the poorly named ‘Bixby’ is actually Viv, the younger child of Dag Kittlaus and friends, the fathers of Siri. ScamScum bought Viv last year. I don’t know why Apple was unable to keep Dag Kittlaus in the fold. I’m interested in seeing what new ideas Dag had that he believed had to be developed outside of Apple.

Oh and the big possible danger with these various ‘digital assistant’ technologies is that by their ‘knowing you’ in order to better serve you, they dump all that data to marketing morons (versus mavens) who use it to abuse you with marketing crap you don’t want, need, desire. Keep that in mind as this all progresses.
One of the reasons Apple literally cut off a limb from Siri is that it was an outlet of user data to a variety of third party services Siri was using to provide information and services. For better or worse, Apple didn’t want that and stopped it.
The difficult question is: How are third party services going to compensated?
Option 1: They can receive money from digital assistant service owners, therefore the users. OR…
Option 2: The third party can go the route of Google and market the hell out of the users, OR…
Option 3: The user can buy what amount to plug-ins for the digital assistant that provide the third party service. (No doubt there would be ‘free’ plug-ins that take user data, and/or dump back marketing crap, as with many iOS apps today).
I personally prefer the third option. Buy what you want, need, desire as services while cutting off the marketing moron crap of option 2; Don’t pay for built-in features of option 1 that you’re never going to use, want, need, desire. If you want to play into the freebie marketing abuse game, that’s your choice.

And, jabbering on, keep in mind that the IoT, Internet of Things, is currently a catastrophe of INsecurity. Very few IoT devices have adequate, if any, security. Expect such devices to become PWNed and to feed you to the hackers/crackers/black hats/government/ad nauseam.
Therefore, be extremely cautious is you’re going to use digital assistants to access IoT devices. There are ways to minimize the damage IoT devices can do to a LAN. But I’m finished lecturing for today. Where’s my coffee?!
