“I pick up the Nintendo Switch, and within moments I’m Link running through the grassy hills of Hyrule in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” Patrick Holland writes for CNET. “It’s been 10 years since I’ve owned a Nintendo console and after just twenty minutes, that old Nintendo feeling is back: I’m buying a Switch.
“The Switch is Nintendo’s latest console and it promises to be a transformer — literally,” Holland writes. “It’s a mobile gaming device that can seamlessly morph into a home console.”
“The Switch isn’t about reliving the past. It’s about translating the essence of Nintendo into a modern and unique console — and it’s caught my interest big time,” Holland writes. “Nintendo is the fun two-seater convertible car, ideal for joyrides. And while there are faster, better-made cars a person can own, the pure essence of Nintendo is unique. It’s an intangible that’s difficult to explain. Yet like so many tech products, when that connection is there, you can feel it.”

“To me, the Switch brims with the best of Nintendo’s DNA. It appears capable of delivering a wonderful single player experience and I can’t wait to try a two player game,” Holland writes. “Now that the Switch has renewed my interest in Nintendo, I just hope that by the time I’m finished playing Breath of the Wild, other Switch games will be ready to buy and play — or perhaps Nintendo will add some of those old NES games to it in the meantime.”

MacDailyNews Take: Nintendo Switch. We haven’t seen this level of excitement for Nintendo since the Wii debuted, but Switch looks like it’ll have more staying power.

Yeah so will it be another 6 mos.to a year before mere mortals can lay their hands on a Swtich like the recent Nintendo Classic Edition availability supply debacle? (Still can’t get even one of those for MSRP 4 months later.)

Only 32Gb of internal RAM? Hmm, the same type of low storage specs of Apple when competitors are going much higher (and cheaper). Switch not ready for prime time without more software for it. Been burned down that route before buying something on faith that was never delivered on down the line. Don’t want anymore white elephants.
It has an SD slot under the kickstand. You can expand the storage.
Still, it should be at least 64Gb.
RAM does not equal STORAGE. The Switch has 4GB of RAM memory, and 32GB of Storage. I am inclined to agree with your assessment that it does need more storage. As for actual memory, both the X-Box One and PS4 have 8GB of RAM memory. So I’m wondering why they skimped on something that should last several production years. Newer games are going to only need more of both.
I think primarily because of the graphics architecture it runs, being a tegra variant, the memory is unified and may be faster than typical drr3/4. Nintendo hasn’t always been about the specs, and if they have made system optimizations for the platform, the performance will be acceptable for a while. It’s also possibly that the switch will be updated mid cycle just as he other two consoles have been.
I well know the difference working with computers since the 80’s (MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 & up, Classic Mac OS, Linux , OS X and now Mac OS) and I hate it too when people confuse the two. Though IGN in discussing it’s specs called it “32Gb of internal memory” and these days the two can start to be blurred because of the solid state speed.
IGN said:

So in fact in this case I was actually correct.

I bought a Switch on launch day.
This guy is spot on. I was a skeptic when I first saw the console announced but after 15 minutes of taking in the beauty of Zelda Breath of The Wild I’m like a kid again.
They nailed it with this game, and the console itself. Remember that feeling of wonder you had the first time you played Zelda on the NES?
This game conjures up those same emotions.
The environment is lush and the game mechanics are so solid. Controls feel right and the world seems alive and it’s calling you to explore it.
I love that I can turn off the TV in my den and take the switch with me. I was up until 2am playing Zelda in bed.
I can’t wait to see where this console/hybrid takes Nintendo.
Never count Nintendo out. They are the Apple Inc of the video game industry. Just when you think they might be finished they end up re-defining video games and reminding us why we love to play them.

A stupid game playing device. For 300 bucks!? Yeah, I sound like Balmer when he saw the iPhone…..but this time it’s real.
I can’t help but think active gamers in general have something else missing in their lives or are bereft in general of having a life and use video games to compensate.
Yeah it’s a beautiful thing. Strip away all that does not matter and shoot for one goal – deep and immersive gameplay.
Apple fans should be able to see the beauty of this simplicity. The switch isn’t trying to be a million different things. It’s designed for one purpose.
There is nothing really exciting about it except maybe the controllers and Mario Odyessy for the common gamer. The only people who will primarily buy it are Nintendo fans. This will not even be as successful as the Wii or DS/3DS. If the switch was small like the 3DS XL WITH the controllers and could play 3DS/DS games and all virtual console games and had longer battery life and still connected to a big screen TV then MAYBE it would take off but alas, no.
I received my Nintendo Switch preorder on 03/03/17 and I so love it. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is a Masterpiece. It is like I’m running around in an artistic living painting that responds to me. I have all the latest game systems and I have not put the Switch down much this weekend. It brings back the kid in me and the joy I felt when I started gaming. A true brilliant game is not just about power and the best graphics. It is about story, gameplay, and the overall experience. I’m joyfully breathless playing Breath of the Wild. The Switch brings big joy to this diehard Apple fan. Nintendo has absolutely nailed it with the Switch by releasing this game at launch. I’m so looking forward to what comes next, the big N is back.
I’m right there with you. I’ve been gaming since the late 70s, have an Atari Asteroids Deluxe and Atari Millipede arcade machines in my den along with an assortment of consoles.
It’s rare when a game like Zelda breath of the wild comes along. It truly proves that video games are more art than science.
