Apple CEO Tim Cook meets with a top Republican U.S. Senator on Capitol Hill

“Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Senator Orrin Hatch Friday, capping off the first full week of a new Washington, with President Donald Trump at the helm,” Hamza Shaban reports for BuzzFeed News.

“Sen. Hatch of Utah, who sits on the Judiciary Committee and the antitrust panel, also leads the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, whose mission is to help keep American tech at the leading edge of global markets,” Shaban reports. “‘During today’s meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook, we discussed ways to grow the economy and our tech industry, as well as his recent visit with me in Utah,’ Sen. Hatch said in an statement to BuzzFeed News. ‘Given the issues I work on as chairman of the Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, it’s especially useful to listen to innovators like Tim.'”

“In the fall, Hatch hosted Cook at a tech conference in Utah, and the two appear to be friendly. Fellow Utah official Sean Reyes, the state’s attorney general, is a leading candidate to chair the Federal Trade Commission, one of two top antitrust posts in the federal government, according to three people with knowledge of Trump’s staffing decisions,” Shaban reports. “Cook also met with leadership of the Department of Veterans Affairs on Thursday to discuss promoting hiring, and other ways the company could help veterans, a person familiar with the meeting told BuzzFeed News.”

      1. Funny how liberals whine and cry over the election. They can’t accept the fact that they lost. The electoral college is genius in that it dilutes the vote evenly as to not give one section/city the power to control the entire country. LOVE IT!

    1. Appleman, Prsident Obama could never please the Republican Party. They had a policy of opposing and blocking anything and everything from the Obama Administrstion, even when he would propose items formerly supported by the GOP (even just the day prior). Obama did not have a chance against that hate and obstructionism. It was not something that could have been “learned.” It was all or nothing with the GOP, and surrendering unconditionally was not an option.

By the way, the GOP railed against Executive Orders for the past eight years (but nt in the Bush Administration). Now Trump starts out with a slew of ECs and all you hear are cheers. Damn hypocrites.

      1. We,the majority, will remain highly vigilant against the blatant falsehood favored by the Trump Administration. They are not “alternative facts,” they are falsehoods. And, since they appear to be intentional, then they are also lies. Not mistakes. Not (just) ignorance. Lies.

  1. Welcome to the 4th Reich my friends. Remember Pastor Niemoller. It happens so slowly you don’t nptice. Called a slippery slope. Trump’s 1st week is alarming,

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

    1. GAWD! Listen to your illogical rant. That applies to every President ever elected however, it’s not the case. If you want to look at true socialists, communists or fascists then look into the Democratic Party.

  2. Tim Cook posted this memo from Washington, DC to Apple employees on Saturday afternoon, 2017-01-28:

Read Apple CEO Tim Cook’s Email To Employees About Trump’s Refugee Ban
“It is not a policy we support,” Cook wrote to Apple employees on Saturday afternoon.

    Team,

In my conversations with officials here in Washington this week, I’ve made it clear that Apple believes deeply in the importance of immigration — both to our company and to our nation’s future. Apple would not exist without immigration, let alone thrive and innovate the way we do.

I’ve heard from many of you who are deeply concerned about the executive order issued yesterday restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. I share your concerns. It is not a policy we support.

There are employees at Apple who are directly affected by yesterday’s immigration order. Our HR, Legal and Security teams are in contact with them, and Apple will do everything we can to support them. We’re providing resources on AppleWeb for anyone with questions or concerns about immigration policies. And we have reached out to the White House to explain the negative effect on our coworkers and our company.

As I’ve said many times, diversity makes our team stronger. And if there’s one thing I know about the people at Apple, it’s the depth of our empathy and support for one another. It’s as important now as it’s ever been, and it will not weaken one bit. I know I can count on all of you to make sure everyone at Apple feels welcome, respected and valued.

Apple is open. Open to everyone, no matter where they come from, which language they speak, who they love or how they worship. Our employees represent the finest talent in the world, and our team hails from every corner of the globe.

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, “We may have all come on different ships, but we are in the same boat now.”

    Tim

  3. A house divided cannot stand. The arrogant, intolerant Dems will follow the pattern of the self interested republicans in a divisive obstructionistic policy, to see America fail will please them to no end. Cutting of your nose to spite your face is the new America. Usama bin Laden is laughing in his grave. Mission accomplished for him.

  4. There was a time when America used to pass laws by making a compromise between the two parties. Often times, way back, these laws were largely bi-partisan (with the usual exception of the extreme blocks in the two parties). The point was that the laws reflected the interests of largest block of constituents.

Today, America is sharply divided in two blocks. Whichever block is in power will, upon taking power, rush to undo any legislation enacted by the other side, and enact legislation with zero support form the other side. What’s worse, in the process of preparing legislation, zero effort is made to take the other side into consideration. If one party controls both houses, they will plow ahead with no regard for anyone else.

And what’s probably the worst, the publicly declared effort to make the only goal during the term in office the obstruction of the party in power (McConnell: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”).
