“Following a merry Christmas, Apple is kicking off the new year with a press release touting how well its popular App Store is doing,” Evan Niu writes for The Motley Fool. “New Year’s Day was the ‘busiest single day ever,’ according to the Mac maker, generating $240 million in sales. Collectively, developers earned over $20 billion in 2016, up 40% from 2015. The cumulative developer payout since the App Store’s launch in 2008 is now $60 billion. There are now 2.2 million apps available in the App Store.”
“It took a full two years for the App Store to pay out its first $1 billion to developers,” Niu writes. “Just three years ago, the cumulative developer payout was $15 billion by the end of 2013, rising to $25 billion by the end of 2014. The most recent update prior to this release was a tweet from Tim Cook in August, when the cumulative payout hit $50 billion.”
Niu writes, “Considering Apple’s long-standing 70/30 split, the $20 billion payout to developers in 2016 translates into approximately $8.6 billion going into Apple’s anodized aluminum coffers.”

Wow that’s good for 7 cents on the PPS the way things are going with Timber in charge.
Would that be the iOS App Store or the Mac App Store or both combined?
So about $4 to $8 per user for the year. On a captive audience of 600-1000MM. Not all that impressive. What’s impressive is the size of the captive audience.
Time for MDN to stop with the cheapskate label for Android users. Unless, of course, Android users get paid to shop…
Yes, before you jump down my throat, that’s profits.
Correcting my arithmetic… about $8 to $16 profit per user for the year.
MDN : Boom!
WS : Doom!
applecynic : Loom!
This probably doesn’t shock you, but I don’t get it.
That’s great, but while I”m still in general complaint mode I’d like to know why APPLE didn’t come out with something like this for the iPhone by partnering with Pellaton, or some other exercise firm? Good grief, this could have been worked up in a month by the engineers, a small group of the engineers!

Okay, okay, it’s not going to make a ton of money but geez, APPLE, things like this create a little buzz and that pours over into other things like iPhone, Mac, etc.
Apple doing something Fun? That would be sacrilegious now…wouldnt it.. ? At least lately .
Maybe APPLE create a new firm named something like, APPLE’s Little Sisters of the Poor Company, with a slogan like, “We’re dedicated to bringing you great products that won’t make us more than $40 billion, but are cool and fun to use just the same.”
Can Tim get 100 people (from their pool of 33000) and just set up a Mac unit independent of Apple Inc and give them a billion. Please?
