“If you missed the Luca Todesco 10.1.1 jailbreak, then there’s potentially some good news – an iOS 10.2 jailbreak tool for Apple’s current version of iOS, could be released soon,” Antony Leather reports for Forbes.
“Thankfully, though, it appears someone is at work on an iOS 10.2 jailbreak, which could offer anyone that missed or refused to upgrade to Luca Todesco’s effort last week a lifeline,” Leather reports. “Stefan Esser (@i0n1c), who’s known for his previous work on the jailbreaking scene, has stated that an iOS 10.2 jailbreak ‘is about to hit soon.'”
“If a jailbreak tool was released for iOS 10.2, it would mark the first time back to back iOS versions have been jailbroken by separate teams in years. This does, of course, mean that Esser may just be engaging in some light trolling here – a lot of would-be jailbreakers have complained about the jailbreak, while many others took issue with the fact that it was unstable and not compatible with older devices such as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus,” Leather reports. “In the meantime, beware of fake jailbreaking websites – there’s currently no way to jailbreak iOS 10.2 so any website claiming to be able to is a scam.”

Why would anyone want to do this? For access to an inferior App Store? To scam the hard work of app developers out of a few pennies? To void the warranty on their iPhones or worse to brick em?!
And why is MDN rooting for this? Wtf?
Not long ago, I read a testimony of an iPhone user who tried jailbreaking. It was a long article, but in essence, it boiled down to this: jailbraking allowed him to do exactly the things it promised to allow him to do (custom wallpapers, widgets, default browser, other unapproved apps, etc), but it also made some other apps unstable, and some simply refused to work. Even some of the original, core apps from Apple became unstable or wouldn’t work.
He restored the original iOS.
I’d really like hear arguments beyond custom themes or default browsers (i.e. what it is that makes the iPhone “vastly more powerful”).
I jailbroke from the original iPhone up until the last. It’s at a point now where the added benefits are reduced due to the evolution of iOS, that combined with jailbreaking not being able to “keep up” with iOS versions which offer new features or major bug fixes.
I would disagree with what you read about it though. In all my years of jailbreaking, I never experienced an increase in instability on any specific version as compared to the same version on iOS. And many times, I found suitable tweaks that helped avoid issues that were present on standard iOS.
In general though, the advantages to jailbreaking came down to, “As a Mac user, do you ever wish you could do ____ on an iPhone? Well, now you can with this tweak/app from Cydia.”
It’s everything from having full filesystem access to direct access to hardware components… Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS.
Of course jailbreaking isn’t for everyone, and in various years (mostly early) it provides more advantages than others, but for a lot of people, there are many reasons. For specific ones, check out any of the online guides, YouTube videos or https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/
It’s my iPhone! I own it. I should be able to do whatever I want with it. I’m not a neophyte. I understand what I’m doing and, because of that, my iPhone is vastly more powerful than a standard iOS iPhone.
Exactly what is it that makes the phone so vastly more powerful than standard iOS that makes it worth the hassle? I had once looked, out of curiosity, into jailbreaking and couldn’t find anything that could compel me to go through the hassle. That was a few years ago. I wonder if there is anything today that makes jailbreaking more compelling than before.
It’s all cosmetic. Because if it makes even one thing MUCH more cool, the changes required break some of the simplest things.
Some folks just can’t having something that works without requiring manual intervention every few hours or so. I think jailbreaking nowadays just gives them the high tech tamagotchi they’ve always wanted!! For free!!
Calm down! Yes, it’s “your” phone. Yes, you own it…….keep your hair on!
Now, calmly, tell us what makes it “VASTLY more powerful”.
I’ll wait.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G, but only when I didn’t need it anymore. It was fun but Apple caught up in the long run in most respects except mail. There was a kickass mail client – can’t recall the name that was better than anything Apple does now.
The other bit of fun was to be had by pointing how everything Android phones offer came to iPhones first… albeit only jailbroken ones.
