The latest status symbol: Using your Apple iPhone 7/Plus in the shower

“In 250 BC, Greek mathematician Archimedes sat down in a public bath and realized that the volume of water displaced equaled the volume of his body,” William Turton reports for Gizmodo. “This was the birth of the ‘eureka!’ moment, and the realization that I could use my iPhone 7 in the shower this weekend was exactly the same.”

“‘This shouldn’t be happening,’ I thought. ‘But it is.’ As hot water trickled down the screen of my new phone for the first time, I felt a compulsion to pull it to safety,” Turton reports. “But when my phone continued to play music and load all of the most recent death threats in my Twitter mentions — just like it does when it is not in the shower — I began to feel more comfortable. Not only that, I felt enlightened.”

“Like a superhero that had finally realized his strength, I suddenly felt superior to all of my peers who don’t have the capability to obsessively respond to emails while also taking a refreshing shower,” Turton reports. “A quick search of Twitter confirmed what I had suspected: using your iPhone in the shower is the latest status symbol.”

MacDailyNews Take: You haven’t lived until you’ve tweeted from the shower.

  1. I think the worst and most (over)used benefit from the waterproof iPhone will be the underwater vacation video (in 4K).

And likely the best one will be the same, with some breathtaking underwater video taken by talented photo/videographers who heretofore simply couldn’t afford (or couldn’t be bothered) with the underwater camera gear, and who can now unleash their creative ideas under water whenever they strike.

By the end of next summer, YouTube will be clogged with all sorts of underwater video, and some of it will be truly breathtaking. And almost all of it will be shot on iPhone 7.

    1. And of course there will be those who took their iPhone 7 underwater and discovered that eventually they leak. At which point the queue starts at the Apple Store asking for replacements. And often shall be heard the responding mantra:

“iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are splash, water, and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.”

      1. A few people have already tested these phones underwater. The current rating claims that the phone will withstand 30 minutes under 1m of depth. For normal snorkeling trips, this is perfectly fine.

However, those YouTube tests reveal 10-minute dives down to the depths of 3, 5 and 6 m (close to 18ft) with no water damage.

As they always say, your mileage may vary, but judging by those test, one can see how the device can take much more than what it is rated for, and the water damage will likely be as rare as it was with prior models.

  2. The whole point of soap is to reduce the waters surface tension, allowing for better penetration. The same thing goes for warm water rather than cold.

Your shower, therefore, has two mechanisms for bypassing the phones waterproofing and are not part of the IP67 specification.

  3. Twitter is for sale and Apple could pick it up with spare change from the couch in a break lounge. As long as they do not put Cue in charge it could do well.

As to selfies in the shower, it all depends on who is doing the selfie. My guess is most should refrain.
