Beleaguered Samsung’s replacement phones have battery problems, too

“Samsung can’t seem to catch a break with the Galaxy Note7 recall. For a while it looked like the replacement devices would put the exploding battery concerns to bed, but now it appears that the saga may be far from over,” Mihăiță Bamburic reports for BetaNews. “The new batteries may no longer be a fire hazard, but follow-up reports from customers who have received replacement Galaxy Note7 units in South Korea reveal that they come with their own set of issues.”

“The batteries that Samsung uses in the replacement Galaxy Note7 units are said to overheat and lose battery life quickly,” Bamburic reports. “The first issue has not caused any device to catch fire so far, though… The battery life issue is unexpected and, quite possibly, more pressing. Customers say that the battery usage graph on their new units shows ‘inconsistent’ charging.”

“A report claims that a replacement Galaxy Note7 lost 40 percent charge ‘quickly'” — and overheated — after being plugged in for charging,” Bamburic reports. “Another customer reports that their new Galaxy Note7 lost 26 percent charge — dropping from 75 percent to 49 percent — in 39 minutes. A third report says that a new Galaxy Note7 lost one percentage point of charge every second while the device reported being charged.”

  1. Why is a galaxy s7 or note 7 that costs 769-869 considered affordable, but an iPhone that’s 649 considered expensive? Why are airpods at 159 considered “super expensive” but Samsung wireless earbuds at 199 aren’t? This narrative is staring to get under my skin.

  2. Must be Stockholm Syndrome, too. In the 90’s and 00’s, it was Wintel. Now it’s Android + Samsung.

It’s not enough the phones can explode. Now the batteries are flaky. What’s to bet the same guys will return their phones again for a THIRD round?

  3. Forgive my unending cruel chuckles in SamSplode’s direction and their continued misfortunes since, well, they ARE so richly deserved.

I would like to shake the gremlin’s hand who is doing the Scamsham irreparable reputation harm there and express my appreciation for having picked the right victim. I think the media could still up the volume considerably on this and capitalize on the schadenfreude.

  4. I’m an EE by degree and for the life of me I can’t fathom how a business can fuck up something as basic as a battery. It’s not like its new technology and any amount of QA testing whatsoever would of easily uncovered design/overheating issues.

    Karma is a beautiful thing.

    1. We’ve all had contact with incometent managers that scream they want something “yesterday!” And then are happy to point the finter at you (or anyone convenient) when things go wrong.

  5. This is pathetic. I wish Samsung and Google or someone would create a real iPhone contender, just to provide competition and keep Apple on its toes. Android fragmentation, user experience inconsistencies, and now major hardware problems will widen the gap between the iPhone and Android. I love Apple products, but competition is healthy and needed for any industry.

    1. Apple competes with itself. So don’t worry. They did that w the first iPhone, and have not stopped since.

Apple does not need so-called “competition” from companies that steal Apple’s IP and sells their so-called innovative products against Apple’s own.

Competitors would develop their own IP. Not steal and copy.

  6. A report claims that a replacement Galaxy Note7 lost 40 percent charge ‘quickly

Of course! And doesn’t that perfectly fit the shite software fix ShameSham threatened to serve to South Korean customers! I’m willing to bet that the replacement phones use EXACTLY the same batteries but use this ridiculous software ‘fix’ to stop fires and explosions.

Samsung’s fix for Note 7 fires: Slash battery life by 40 percent
Here’s one way Samsung is trying to keep the Galaxy Note 7 phone you refuse to return from blowing up. Capping how much you can charge the phone.

What a shite company. (IMHO of course)
    💩🔥💩💥💩🔥💩💥💩

      1. Rather, my guess is that the replacements Samsung are foisting are the same hardware, including battery. The difference is that the replacement phones are hobbled with the software that stops the batteries from charging past 60%. AKA a CHEAT (IMHO of course). (0_o) (o_0)
