“Half of all current iPhone owners will upgrade to the next iPhone, believed to be known as the iPhone 7, as soon as the device launches later this year, a new study from device warranty provider Insurance2Go found in a survey of more than 1,000 people,” Don Reisinger reports for Fortune. “Nearly eight in ten current iPhone owners will upgrade either at launch or at some point thereafter, but will definitely choose the iPhone 7 when that time comes, the survey found.”
“However, Insurance2Go added that 19% of iPhone owners are planning to turn to the Samsung Galaxy S7 or another version of Samsung’s handset instead of the iPhone 7,” Reisinger reports. “Just 8% of existing iPhone owners will upgrade to a different device.”
MacDailyNews Take: Based on historical data and user satisfaction, this either this report or the survey’s findings are flawed (seems it’s the report, see our Take below). There is simply no way in hell that “19% of iPhone owners are planning to turn to the Samsung Galaxy S7 or another version of Samsung’s handset.” Period.
Reisinger reports, “Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 7 later this year and will likely launch the device in the fall around the same time its iOS 10 mobile operating system launches.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve found another report that makes more sense: “Only one in five (19%) of those surveyed said their next upgrade will be to a Samsung S7 or another version of the South Korean company’s handsets, while a further 8% will be upgrading to another handset provider,” Finance Digest reports. So, it’s 19% of the 1,000 people surveyed, not “iPhone owners,” who are planning to screw themselves with an Samsung iPhone wannabe. These poor, misguided saps are likely already toting around fake iPhones already, they are not “iPhone owners” as reported by Fortune‘s Reisinger.
So, bottom line: Half of all current iPhone owners will upgrade to Apple’s next-gen iPhone. In other words, as Steve would say: Boom!

The survey is crap, and poorly written.
Still, your comment “So, bottom line: Half of all current iPhone owners will upgrade to Apple’s next-gen iPhone” is just as bad. Half of all iPhone purchased in the last 12 quarters (three years) is about 300,000,000 units. While that would be great it exceeds all current estimates but about 20$.
If you interpret Reisinger’s statement to literally mean ALL iPhone owners that number jumps to 450 MILLION units (since iPhone 4S launch).
More likely, this poorly written report means that half the iPhone owners holding iPhones sold since the iPhone 4S was launched, and more than 2 years old, you get a much more believable 200 Million upgrade units. Add 25% ‘switchers’ and FY2017 will see about 250 million new iPhones (of all flavors) sold.
I wouldn’t put any faith in Reisinger’s “study” or analysis of the data.
My personal estimate for FY2017 iPhone unit sales is 260 Million.
