Nintendo mulls game controllers for iPhones and iPads

“Nintendo has major plans to focus on smart device development, including possibly designing its own controller for mobile gaming, according to general manager of entertainment planning and developement, Shinya Takahashi,” Julia Alexander reports for Polygon. “One of the biggest takeaways from Nintendo’s annual general shareholders meeting was its decision to dedicate a large portion of its efforts on developing new software for smart devices, like smartphones and tablets.”

“Takahashi is leading the smart device development team at the company, and said Nintendo is looking into both hardware and software development for different types of games and experiences,” Alexander reports. “‘Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves,’ Takahashi said. ‘I believe Nintendo’s way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game.'”

Alexander reports, “Nintendo previously announced that it was working on five mobile titles to be released by March, the same month its new console, the NX, will be released.”

MacDailyNews Take: How about for Apple TV, or is that a bit too close to home?

  1. Nintendo reminds me of Apple a lot. Extremely creative and they have redefined their industry more than once.

I could see them being successful with their own custom controllers. A lot of their content just does not work when they force it to conform to inputs that they did not design.

Hoping for the best for the big N.

    1. A number of times over the years I have advocated for a collaboration between Appl and Nintendo. Nintendo’s product mesh extremely well with Apple’s iOS strategy and family-friendly philosophy. By getting away from the hardware and focusing on the software, Nintendo could refresh its gaming products and achieve much greater profits selling into a user base of hundreds of millions.

Personally, I believe that Apple should either move to acquire Nintendo (if that is an option), license its gaming IP (if that is an option), or establish a partnership to market Nintendo games and controllers for iOS.

  2. I have read that a few times and still can’t work out if they are saying they will produce controllers, or are really saying while we won’t rule out producing controllers we are primarily looking to see if there are other ways to control such games on these devices.
