Alphabet said working on Google-branded ‘iPhone killer’

“Google is planning a shake-up of the smartphone market by releasing its own handset, a move that would tighten its grip on mobile software and see it compete directly with the iPhone,” James Titcomb reports for The Telegraph. “The technology giant is in discussions with mobile operators about releasing a Google-branded phone that will extend the company’s move into hardware, sources familiar with the discussions told The Telegraph.”

“The new device, which will be released by the end of the year according to a senior source, will see Google take more control over design, manufacturing and software,” Titcomb reports. “‘They are concerned that Android is fragmenting, that it needs to become a more controlled platform,’ said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight. ‘I think they’ll seek to control it more, more like Apple.'”

Titcomb reports, “Earlier this year it hired Rick Osterloh, the former president of Motorola, to lead a new hardware division in a sign of its growing ambitions.”

    1. Actually, all stocks have fallen because of Brexit. In fact, Apple is doing better and has fallen less than major indicators.

Bottom line, genius….go troll somewhere else.

  1. They will make a good product. They have the tallent, money, and drive. There is a huge market in android land and google could be a big winner and take a lot of market share from the lower end of hemmoirid android market.

    1. So why did they fail to do just that before with similar efforts that had precisely the same intent? The only way they will succeed is if they effectively cut their associates off from the latest android technologies and software. That would be a very dangerous road as retaliation would be ensured and just might get the opposition to unite in ways that Google has been very careful to head off.

  2. Google and Samscum have sunken a $$$$$$$$$ fortune into shorting, killing all positive Apple sentiment and smearing Apple with malicious FUD for the past few years in preperation for this POS.

It’s easy when you have a millenial ignorance that “educates” itself by Goooooogling. Bring on the Goolenial idiots .

  3. Google is the new M$. They have a virtual monopoly in their core market and are pouring their profits down as many drains as they can find.
We will see whether Google can do make a decent phone. Their main problem is that they are software developers foremost. That means that they do not have the patience to develop a device where software and hardware work seamlessly. They will release something that is good enough and will have too many rouge edges in its implementation.

  4. I’m sure Google can hire the hardware talent. I think their culture will be their Achilles heal. The mother of perpetual beta will have a difficult time producing a truly finished and refined product that would be able to take a chunk of Apple’s market and mind share.

    1. Everything is perpetual beta today, even Apple products.

The time between iOS bug fix updates measures in weeks, and has nagware built in that seems to have been designed by Microsoft.

Watch OS 3 is being advertised as the one that finally delivers what people expected. Still clumsy and limited usefulness.

tvOS is clearly still a hobby, Apple continues to try to install essential features that the competition has offered for 3 years or more.

It remains to be seen if Sierra will fix the many issues of El Cap. Since all Apple seems to care about these days is tying everyone to iCloud, desktop functionality and usability may see zero improvement. Unless you like debating with Siri what you really intended to say versus what she hears. Oh what fun….

    1. Gee i said that using more words and got bad stars, you koolaid drinkers are the worst, yes lower end android manufacturers will be the big looser. Google has the ability. Get over it. Gee if there was no alternative to apple i think you commoes would be all in bliss. Apple needs competition especially not. Its fallen back on its lame laurels.

  5. Didn’t Microsoft hold a mock funeral for the iPhone. The fact of the matter is, no one is going to kill the iPhone. I am so sick of hearing that statement. The cohesion of hardwar and software is what makes the iPhone great. I realize Google owns Android, but they have a tremendous amount of work to do to create the kind of harmony iPhone and iOS have. And let’s not even get started on the security problems of Android. To paraphrase Steve Jobs; one company does not have to fail for another to succeed. There is room in the market for several major players. Focus on making the best product and competition will take care of itself.

  6. I think that since Samsung and others are developing their own Linux based mobile OSes, Google’s worried about them taking their Android ad product (customers) with them. Most folks, if they like the current Samsung phone they have, will buy a new one, whether it’s Android or Tizen.
