“Apple CEO Tim Cook will host a fundraiser with House Speaker Paul Ryan next week as the iPhone maker tries to strengthen its relationships with key Republicans — despite its decision to pull support for the GOP convention because of its distaste for Donald Trump,” Tony Romm reports for Politico.
“Cook will help generate cash for Ryan at a private breakfast on June 28 in Menlo Park, Calif., along with Gary Wipfler, the company’s treasurer, according to an invite obtained by Politico on Monday,” Romm reports. “The money benefits not only the speaker but a joint fundraising committee aimed at helping to elect other House Republicans.”
“Cook is hosting the fundraiser on his own accord, as Apple does not have a corporate political action committee like Facebook, Google and other tech giants in Silicon Valley. Still, the move reflects Apple’s desire to court Republican and Democratic officeholders alike, even at a time when it has serious reservations about Trump, the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee,” Romm reports. “In August [2015], Cook hosted a fundraiser for Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a major ally in the company’s calls for tax reform, in Atherton, Calif., according to an invite obtained by Politico.”

I use to think Cook had class and a brain – no more! Paul Ryan is one of the most over rated, morally challenged and screwed up politicians in office today. While the challenger to his seat is a bit of a nut job, at least he is more transparent and does not adore Ayn Rand with some sort of religious fervor. Cook, you obviously have not done your homework on this decision.

from a business and practical standpoint it is not too hard to see why he is doing so, in hopes of garnering some protective political support for apple.

Some of Donald Trumps ideas trouble me but I’m also troubled somewhat by Apple taking political stances. I’ve read some of Trumps books years back (Art of the Deal and so on) so I’m not a universal Trump hater but since he got onto TV and politics I’ve been turned off but Apple’s stance is bothersome as it seems to be a new precedent.
Steve Jobs focused more on products and the consumer experience rather than social or political initiatives that Cook is into. Jobs didn’t even want to celebrate Apple’s 30th anniversary as he wanted Apple to focus on products, he didn’t have Apple do much charity or political contributions either (Apple just matched employees charitable donations) so that Apple didn’t have to make JUDGEMENTS on who or what was worthy. Jobs was just laser focused on products.
When apple donates to both democratic and republican conventions it shows not support for an individual candidate but for the POLITICAL PROCESS (which is a somewhat different thing).

“I’m saying Jobs much more than Cook kept Apple out of partisanship or social activity. His belief was that Apple service to humanity was to PROVIDE REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCTS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY TO CHANGE LIVES and not by using Apple as a ‘soapbox’.
On very rare occasions Jobs made what might be construed as a social statement like his ideas on education but I think he did that as a PRIVATE citizen and not as ‘this is what Apple believes’ which is what T.C is doing. Also what happens to the REPUBLICANS working for apple or the customers. Many of them don’t really support all of Trumps ideas but might be troubled by Apple’s move not to support the convention. Getting Apple into partisan politics gets very confusing and takes up resources. Instead of SVPs focusing on products, quality control they are focused on social work. The Mac Pro is 3 years old with no update and no drop in price and Jony Ive is making furniture etc for charities. I think apple needs to rein in.

Today’s Republican Party is far from Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and others. The cabal today are a strange amalgamation of people suckered into serving the interests of other people who do not give a damn about them. What the GOP stands for is far from anything Apple has traditionally stood for, what Steve Jobs stood for, what Woz stands for.
David Drier was eased out of Republican leadership when the GOP took majority status in the House because they did not want to out him as the Gay Man he is. It is an open secret in Washington, but not mentioned so much among NeoCon Republicans.
Today’s GOP trades in fear mongering of the other, repression of open speech, distrust of peer reviewed science, a rigid attachment to disproven economic theories and open hostility to a stewardship type approach to the environment. They have proven very adept at suckering low income, low information voters into voting against their self interest.
Paul Ryan is supposed to be a Wunderkind among Conservatives, but is actually a grifter that hawks crap based upon cooked numbers that do not pass the basic math of budgets, finance and economics. Why anyone would spend a minute or a dime on his advancement is beyond reckoning.
