Apple CEO Cook to host Paul Ryan fundraiser as company tries to strengthen relationships with key Republicans

“Apple CEO Tim Cook will host a fundraiser with House Speaker Paul Ryan next week as the iPhone maker tries to strengthen its relationships with key Republicans — despite its decision to pull support for the GOP convention because of its distaste for Donald Trump,” Tony Romm reports for Politico.

“Cook will help generate cash for Ryan at a private breakfast on June 28 in Menlo Park, Calif., along with Gary Wipfler, the company’s treasurer, according to an invite obtained by Politico on Monday,” Romm reports. “The money benefits not only the speaker but a joint fundraising committee aimed at helping to elect other House Republicans.”

“Cook is hosting the fundraiser on his own accord, as Apple does not have a corporate political action committee like Facebook, Google and other tech giants in Silicon Valley. Still, the move reflects Apple’s desire to court Republican and Democratic officeholders alike, even at a time when it has serious reservations about Trump, the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee,” Romm reports. “In August [2015], Cook hosted a fundraiser for Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a major ally in the company’s calls for tax reform, in Atherton, Calif., according to an invite obtained by Politico.”

        1. What reality are you living in? Do you even read the news? The Feds under the Obama administration have been going after Apple for a long time now…..ask anyone that works for the company. You don’t really think that Trump supporters went full Samsung and traded in their iPhones just because of what he said back then? I know plenty of Trump supporters that carry iPhones, plenty.

  1. Go Timmy! Keep you head up the Republicans’ asses so Apple can keep getting those “sweet deals”! Just gotta love those tax dodging breaks, slave working conditions, over-priced products, over-seas labor and operations, and anti-American privacy products. Your a real winner…or is that whiner! Doesn’t matter: My days with Apple products are coming to an end. I was a faithful Apple user since the 1980s, but you have managed to kill the excitement I once had for Apple. Maybe you should run as Trump’s running mate and become one of the GOP (Grand Old Psychopaths) faithful.

    1. “My days with Apple products are coming to an end.”

Wow, the melodrama! I trust you will also stop using all products where you have a similar level of disagreement with their tax and employment policies.

Apple are shining angels on both fronts, compared to most.
Good luck finding enough to buy to stay alive.

  2. I use to think Cook had class and a brain – no more! Paul Ryan is one of the most over rated, morally challenged and screwed up politicians in office today. While the challenger to his seat is a bit of a nut job, at least he is more transparent and does not adore Ayn Rand with some sort of religious fervor. Cook, you obviously have not done your homework on this decision.

    1. EXACTLY.
The only time I’ve *shivered* watching and listening to a politician was the first time I witnessed Paul Ryan speaking. He is a verifiable psychopath and continuously justifies my assessment of him. Knowing that, consider the fact that he is #3 in line for the presidency as Speak of the House. Sick times.
      :-Q*****

      1. The ONLY time!!!? Seriously!!!? Not that I disagree with your evaluation of him at all… but to not have a bunch of others in the category 5 batshit box with him is incomprehensible to me.

        1. Batshit crazy is one thing. I can laugh at them. Transparently deceitful I can see a mile away. But when someone pulls together charisma, looks, mild mannered concern about the future and our general well being when he actually wants to FSCK-THE-HELL-OUT-OF-YOU… *shiver* …That’s scary. It’s into that vague and abstract world of evil that no sane human being wants to believe can be real. That’s how nuts and dangerous this guy is. Trust him not-an-inch.

Cue the theme from ‘Criminal Minds’.

  3. PSYCHO PAUL?! SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

This is the MOST sick moment I’ve ever experienced as an Apple supporter.

    :-Q***** X ∞

    Shame on you Tim Cook.
    Shame on you Apple.
    Enjoy your alliance with psychopathy.
    Sick sign of the times.

    1. don’t you mean NAY- phones ?

i think given mr. ryans views on a great number of social issues, not to mention his spineless decision to support donald trump, it is morally reprehensible of tim cook to help raise funds for him.

from a business and practical standpoint it is not too hard to see why he is doing so, in hopes of garnering some protective political support for apple.

even so it is not exactly a “profile in courage” moment for tim.

  4. Here is what I said the other day in the ‘no support for Trump convention’ article:

    I cut and paste:

“The problems with supporting or condemning a candidate is that you invariably anger some people and there’s a chance you will make mistakes in your judgement (perhaps in the future about someone else as it sets a precedent) ”

“are the SVPs so qualified that they can make social judgements unfailingly? like i said this sets a PRECEDENT, what about AFTER trump, who is next? I really think this a dangerous game making judgements on people supporting or condemning them. (like I was a fan of Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong and look what happened… )

‘you can see the slippery slope Apple is on.”

“Apple should mostly keep out of politics”

    ———–
that said though in this day and age without political support Apple gets whacked by the FBI, DOJ, IRS etc.
    what’s the solution?

    1. those people one starring me, here is my post the other day in its entirety,:

      “2 cents.

Some of Donald Trumps ideas trouble me but I’m also troubled somewhat by Apple taking political stances. I’ve read some of Trumps books years back (Art of the Deal and so on) so I’m not a universal Trump hater but since he got onto TV and politics I’ve been turned off but Apple’s stance is bothersome as it seems to be a new precedent.

Steve Jobs focused more on products and the consumer experience rather than social or political initiatives that Cook is into. Jobs didn’t even want to celebrate Apple’s 30th anniversary as he wanted Apple to focus on products, he didn’t have Apple do much charity or political contributions either (Apple just matched employees charitable donations) so that Apple didn’t have to make JUDGEMENTS on who or what was worthy. Jobs was just laser focused on products.

When apple donates to both democratic and republican conventions it shows not support for an individual candidate but for the POLITICAL PROCESS (which is a somewhat different thing).

the problems with supporting or condemning a candidate is that you invariably anger some people and there’s a chance you will make mistakes in your judgement (perhaps in the future about someone else as it sets a precedent) . For example I’ve seen so many people and corporations support someone and then that someone turns out not what he seems ( an example which is not political but illustrative is the Subway spokesperson who was a hidden child molester. ).

Like I said I am troubled by some of Trumps’ comments but Apple seems to be heading towards a SLIPPERY SLOPE, in the future it might make a mistake supporting someone or condemning someone and then find out it was in error.

(note that I think condemning a SPECIFIC comment made by a candidate is DIFFERENT than withhold all support for the Republican convention. Like I said — to me — donating to both sides, den and repub, is just a statement on support for the political PROCESS i.e a part of USA democracy and not necessarily an endorsement of the candidate).”

“I’m saying Jobs much more than Cook kept Apple out of partisanship or social activity. His belief was that Apple service to humanity was to PROVIDE REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCTS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY TO CHANGE LIVES and not by using Apple as a ‘soapbox’.

On very rare occasions Jobs made what might be construed as a social statement like his ideas on education but I think he did that as a PRIVATE citizen and not as ‘this is what Apple believes’ which is what T.C is doing. (apparently Jobs and his wife were quite involved in charities and social work but it was all private.)

Look at the comments on this forum: don’t you think it’s divisive? Most of the old time posters here usually have insightful stuff on TECH , now they are tearing at each other over politics or spending time discussing it in a TECH forum ! (I’m doing it MYSELF !).

is this a reflection of what is also happening inside Apple, i.e that people are talking POLITICS and SOCIAL ACTIVISM as opposed to TECH, making great products (or fixing bugs , like it took forever to fix the simple Wifi bug)? Friends please note Apple is BUSINESS TECH ENTITY it is NOT a social pressure group like Greenpeace. Apple isn’t or shouldn’t be run by social activists or social lawyers etc : are the SVPs so qualified that they can make social judgements unfailingly? like i said this sets a PRECEDENT, what about AFTER trump, who is next? I really think this a dangerous game making judgements on people supporting or condemning them. (like I was a fan of Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong and look what happened… )

Also what happens to the REPUBLICANS working for apple or the customers. Many of them don’t really support all of Trumps ideas but might be troubled by Apple’s move not to support the convention. (go read my post) i think supporting BOTH conventions is more for supporting POLITICAL PROCESS rather than Trump and not supporting one side seems slapping down on all republicans. Like I said I am troubled by Trump’s comments but you can see the slippery slope Apple is on.

Trump is perhaps a above the rest but we have to admit ALL politicians make statements that might be disturbing to some. Like I said Apple condemning SPECIFIC statements someone made is different from not supporting the republican convention as a whole.

Getting Apple into partisan politics gets very confusing and takes up resources. Instead of SVPs focusing on products, quality control they are focused on social work. The Mac Pro is 3 years old with no update and no drop in price and Jony Ive is making furniture etc for charities. I think apple needs to rein in.
the CEO , SVPs etc can make their own private social comments but Apple should mostly keep out of politics.

think about it what if India or China or Saudi Arabia asks Apple to make a political statement (like “Communism is Good” or “the Royal Family is Wonderful” ) can apple now strongly say “Apple’s worldwide policy is that we don’t do politics” ?.”

  5. Today’s Republican Party is far from Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and others. The cabal today are a strange amalgamation of people suckered into serving the interests of other people who do not give a damn about them. What the GOP stands for is far from anything Apple has traditionally stood for, what Steve Jobs stood for, what Woz stands for.

David Drier was eased out of Republican leadership when the GOP took majority status in the House because they did not want to out him as the Gay Man he is. It is an open secret in Washington, but not mentioned so much among NeoCon Republicans.

Today’s GOP trades in fear mongering of the other, repression of open speech, distrust of peer reviewed science, a rigid attachment to disproven economic theories and open hostility to a stewardship type approach to the environment. They have proven very adept at suckering low income, low information voters into voting against their self interest.

Paul Ryan is supposed to be a Wunderkind among Conservatives, but is actually a grifter that hawks crap based upon cooked numbers that do not pass the basic math of budgets, finance and economics. Why anyone would spend a minute or a dime on his advancement is beyond reckoning.

I guess you can take the boy out of Alabama but you cannot take the Alabama out of the boy.

  6. Hmm. If Tim think this will please Republicans as in the ones actually voting, he is way off, go read Ryan’s Facebook comments. If he thinks this will buy influence he may be right, untill January.
