“Following a rare firmware update for the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule earlier this week, a few readers have contacted us about the Wi-Fi base stations being out of stock at their local Apple retail stores in the United States,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“Specifically, the tipsters informed us that the AirPort Extreme was out of stock at the Apple Store, Sagemore location in Marlton, New Jersey, an outer suburb of Philadelphia, and the Apple Store, Beverly Center location in Los Angeles, California,” Rossignol reports. “To verify the tipster’s claim, we contacted an Apple support representative who confirmed that Apple has pulled AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule stock from all U.S. stores. The base stations remain available to order online, while it appears the smaller AirPort Express can still be purchased both online and in stores at present time.”
Rossignol reports, “With WWDC 2016 around the corner, scarce availability of the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule in the U.S. will naturally stir speculation about a possible refresh to its Wi-Fi base station lineup.”

My ISP began using IPv6. When they increased my speed to 200Mps, my network didn’t work. Customer service said this was a known problem with the Airport Extreme. They advised me to set the Airport Extreme to link-local, which did fix the problem. This latest firmware update allows me to turn IPv6 back on. Apparently this was a bug-fix update; the bug was triggered by high speeds.
Do you have an AC AirPort Extreme? I only ask because we have a gigabit connection using IPv6, and have since 2014 with no issues….

I wanna hear Apple Stores are out of stock on 2013 Mac Pro’s and the implications of that.
Not going to happen. Tim Cook and Jony Ive don’t seem to have a clue about high-end desktops for professionals. They’re more interested in radical designs than practicality. That D700 graphics processor has been around since 2013 which is really rather pathetic considering all the advances since then.
Well if so it looks as though I may have to regretfully and disdainfully switch platforms. Pro’s want what they want and end up going where they have to to get it. Slick minimalist design is decidedly NOT a pro consideration as much as other more important things.
What about the Airport Express? It hasn’t been updated since 2012 (even longer than the Mac Pro). The current Airport Express is stuck at 802.11a/b/g/n (NO 802.11ac) and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet (no gigabit Ethernet). So Apple’s Airport Express is stuck in standards dating back to 2009 and before.
Seems Apple *expects* you to buy a second Airport Extreme if you want to extend beyond the range on an single Airport Extreme.

Amazing… I have the first 802.11n (square) version from 2007, and it received this firmware update. No problems after installation, but I’m wondering what it does differently. 🙂
I have a Time Capsule in my network, but for my main router, i opted for an Asus. This thing has been more reliable than any Apple router I have used. AC speed all over my house. The Time Capsule has been relegated to be my wife’s wireless TimeMachine backup.
I LOVE my Time Capsule. It wasn’t cheep, but it saved my but a couple of times.
It figures. I just bought one in April because my old one died.
