“A large number of MacBook Pro owners running OS X El Capitan are reporting widespread system freezes since installing the 10.11.4 update to Apple’s Mac OS,” Tim Hardwick reports for MacRumors.
“Hundreds of MacRumors forum members have been posting to a dedicated thread to discuss the issue, which spans 20 pages at the time of writing,” Hardwick reports. “The problem appears to be concentrated on 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros (Early 2015) running 10.11.4.”
Hardwick reports, “Users report that their system becomes totally unresponsive at seemingly random times, with no way to regain access to their Mac other than to force a hard reboot. ”

MacDailyNews Take: Our sources tell us that Apple is aware of this issue and is working on a fix. 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (Early 2015) users may want to forgo updating to OS X 10.11.4 for the time being.

I’m on the beta 10.5 and it hasn’t gotten any better…yet.
I had a freeze last week on a Macbook Air. No biggie. I just restarted and then updated to the 10.11.5 beta a few days later. It was actually sort of nostalgic. I haven’t had OS X freeze on me in many years.
It’s not just the MacBook Pro. I own a 13″ non-retina MacAir: Apple e-mail no longer connects, the screen freezes, and Guest User (which is disabled) pops-up on the sign-in screen after reboot. My neighbor’s 11″ MacAir has frozen completely and he can’t even access his OS! As I stated several years ago, Tim Cook will destroy the Apple computer. For anyone who want to write something negative to this comment, you can start by naming ONE – just ONE – OS that has been functional since Tim Cook became CEO. I’ve been a Mac user since the late 1980s, and sadly I think it’s time invest in Wndow – at least I’ll know what I’m dealing with!
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard was super stable for me. But this was when Steve Jobs was CEO. Since Tim Cook took over, not one OS is has been worth a damn!!!!!!
Steve was still in charge when Lion was released along with the joke called iCloud.
This haven’t been the same since Snow Leopard was discontinued.
Not just a software bug, I’ve also seen failures in the field due to sata cable failure in this model. The failure mode makes the MacBook slow, then unresponsive.
The aging 8 year old MacBook is working just fine with the new OS. So is the 11 inch MacBook Air.
Strange the the Pro line should be having problems though.

As a member of the testing community for Apple, I can tell you that apple puts their OS through plenty of testing. And, as everyone knows, no matter how much testing you do even with thousands of testers, something will pop up.
And are you really complaining that ONE model of MacBook is having a problem? Seriously? Microsoft has released updates that have shut down millions of systems across multiple models. Come on, you clearly just like shitting on Apple.
I have El Capitan 10.11.4 on all 5 of my Macs INCLUDING my Mid 2007 24 inch iMac which is actually end-of-lifed with Apple and all of them run better than ever. So, congratulations Apple on another wonderful upgrade that continues to refine and optimize above the previous version.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you think their products are such shit, then just go by a Windows machine and stop trolling the Mac forums. Enjoy it. Can’t wait to hear you drool over your amazing specs without mentioning the awful OS you are forced to run or how those amazing specs are built on inferior hardware components that will fail in 6 months. Notice that in the latter, you are not being asked to agree with anyone, there is no great barrier to moving, you are not being punished and you are NOT being deprived of anything. These things are hard to catch. How is it that out of hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of MBPs a few hundred have problems?
I used to write software for a scientific instrument. We would test things a lot in-house but when I visited customers I would find odd things that I had never seen.
I have seen unsolved issues where memory would pass memory tests for hours but would fail when running an applications. Changing memory would fix the problem. No idea why.
Amusing that people think this never happened before Tim Cook. Happened under Jobs all the time.

I’m sorry, but the many apologists on this site seem oblivious to the fact that Cook has not maintained the software quality that once made Apple truly great. He is allowing Apple to become the new Microsoft.
I have to point out that such, admittedly appauling, problems have been more or less regular events from Apple pre-Jobs’ return, during Jobs’ return and after Job’s return.

I have a new MBP 15″ with maxed out everything. At night, when I go to sleep, I put the brightness all the way down, ith no or almost no apps running. 50% of the time, when I wake up and reverse the process, my Mac does not wake up.
I’d recommend avoiding OS X 10.11.x in general on any Mac until the new update, 10.11.5, comes out of beta. Apple screwed the Finder in 10.11 and finally got around to fixing it again in 10.11.5.
Meanwhile, I’m running a test partition of 10.11.4 on my late 2013 MBP 15″ without any freezes.
I had to Time Machine back to 10.6 Snow Leopard (laugh).
Snow Leopard … one of the last truly great things released from Cupertino.
I have to restart my MacBook Air 11 several times a day – and I’m using the 10.11.5 beta – that doesn’t bode well.
Beta software that’s expected. That’s why it’s beta software.
Disabling Dashboard in Mavericks stopped the slowdowns and freezes. Maybe Dashboard is still problematic?
Thankfully, it’s really easy to disable the Dashboard — open up a Terminal window and paste this in:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES && killall Dock
To reverse it and re-enable it, use this:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO && killall Dock
No they are not. I can clearly say there is no wide spread crashing of any Macs period.
