Apple’s Jony Ive opens Met Gala ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ event in Manhattan

“Last fall we learned that Apple would sponsor this year’s Met Gala with Jony Ive serving as a co-chair for the event,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac.

“Today the Chief Design Officer at Apple is in New York City speaking before an audience ahead of the annual fundraising event tonight,” Hall reports. “The event’s theme this year is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”, where Apple is clearly relevant since bringing Apple Watch to market last year. Jony Ive previously spoke about Apple’s motivation for sponsoring this year’s Met Gala.”

Hall reports, “A brief clip of Jony Ive’s appearance surfaced on Periscope.”

  1. So glad Apple’s so focused on the fashion world. It’s not like their Pro-Level desktop is way past due for a major update or their flagship product, the iPhone, is about to release for a third year in a row the same basic model.

Apple needs a visionary, not a bean counter.

  2. Why do longtime Mac users malign the fashion angle? It’s been there all along, most pointedly with the introduction of the iMac that led to Jony Ive’s ascendence in industrial design. Steve Jobs understood marketing and design and how they sent messages to consumers, messages that were more like love letters than extortion demands. Result: Apple had transcendent success.

    But Steve Jobs is dead.

Are we now to expect the same result from a different formula? Even the witches in Macbeth couldn’t be sure of that. Eye of newt and toe of frog, sure. 16 gigabyte RAM? Weak sauce indeed.

    1. I can’t speak for all of those who malign Apple for it’s move into the fashion industry but, speaking for myself; if the company doesn’t have time to come up with and implement a new iPhone design over the 2 years it will have been since the iPhone 6 launch (provided, of course, the rumors are true), if the company can’t find the time to update the 3 year old Mac Pro or give users what many really want (a tower based system that better fits some of our needs), can’t put enough time into the software side of things to ensure that ‘it just works’ (so many buggy software launches during Cook’s tenure), can’t find the time to pay attention to details such as the lack of an iOS app to control the new AppleTV or the other blunders/oversights that have happened over the past 5 years then how do they have the time to make the push into the fashion side of things?

The examples you mentioned aren’t so much cases of fashion so much as they are cases of brilliant industrial engineering which is still, and will probably always be crucial to the continued success of the company.

All this said, at least for me, it’s not really even about Apple forging into the fashion aspect of things, it’s about Apple doing so, seemingly, at the expense of other things that need attention – some desperately!
