“AMC this week launched a tvOS app with a content selection mirroring that of its iOS app and web portal, including free-to-stream episodes of hit shows like ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘The Night Manager,'” AppleInsider reports.
“Currently, Apple TV owners can stream the first three episodes of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ without signing in as a subscriber,” AppleInsider reports. “Show extras are always available for streaming, but viewers must link their cable or satellite provider account details with the app to access AMC’s back catalog of full episodes.”
AppleInsider reports, “AMC’s app is a free 15.6MB download from the tvOS App Store.”

MacDailyNews Take: Slowly, but surely, Apple TV’s value increases – of course, most of it still requires a cable/satellite or other subscription, so… Where are those skinny bundles about which we once heard so much excitement, Apple?
The skinny bundles are not going to be the game changer though they will show up.. beginning this fall. The real difference will be premium content (as it always has been) showing FIRST on Apple TV (within contract constraints) and to the highest bidder otherwise.
Select episodes that are free to stream with the rest requiring a cable subscription is almost worse than nothing.
Apple is having to claw its way into this space ever so slowly because the networks and studios has seen what happens when Apple is given “right of way” into a new market. So they have been asking Apple for unacceptably large slices of the revenue streams in their negotiations.
It’s like playing chess. Apple needs to move tactically to change facts on the ground doing small deals with willing partners. The tipping point will come when Apple is in a position to offer compelling new revenue streams and threaten existing revenue streams. Only when the networks and studios are forced to deal with Apple will an equitable agreement be reached on revenue sharing. Then, finally, we will see Apple’s vision of what AppleTV was meant to be.
I downloaded it and like some many of these deleted it within a few minutes. Why Comcast doesn’t work with half of these apps is beyond me. What a crappy company they are.
As long as I have to register with my provider, it’s not a true app.
Count me out.
Why providers want to charge more for viewing options that actually creates more views is beyond me.

This looks like a good reason for Apple to buy a couple of networks or studios. No reason to negotiate absurd fees for content when you can just own it.
