Analyst predicts ‘iPhone SE’ to be a hit with upgraders, selling up to 15 million units in first year

“While larger iPhones have driven sales among switchers, a new 4-inch iPhone is likely to drive upgrades among existing Apple users, to the tune of up to 15 million units per year, one analyst believes,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Amit Daryanani of RBC Capital Markets issued a note to investors on Wednesday, noting that only 40 percent of the install base has upgraded to Apple’s larger 4.7- or 5.5-inch iPhone models,” Hughes reports. “He believes next week’s expected debut of the 4-inch “‘iPhone SE’ is a strategic move by Apple to accelerate existing users’ upgrade cycles.”

Hughes reports, “Daryanani’s projections call for Apple to sell between 10 million and 15 million ‘iPhone SE”‘ units annually.”

  1. I would have thought that 15 million is very much on the light side and would be expecting an annual sales figure of 25 to 30 million.

Once people start thinking about the convenience of a compact smartphone, I think that they will take to it readily. Smartphones used to be the only portable devices that we used, but now that people also use smart watches and tablets, there are tasks that each does best and some of our iPhones will be spending more time in our pockets, which makes a smaller iPhone more advantageous.

    1. Yippee, something for everyone. Something Apple cannot be criticized for ever again. I think a lot of people who dabbled in larger phones might want to come back to a smaller one. And those who prefer the smallest iPhone will be all too ready to upgrade to this new one, like some of my family members.
