Coming at Apple’s March 21st event: 4-inch iPhone SE, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, new Apple Watch bands, and more

“If Apple’s most recent hardware events were about going bigger (larger iPhones, a jumbo iPad, and a new Apple TV), Apple’s March 21st event is about going smaller,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“Apple yesterday officially sent invites to its much-anticipated event to be held at its Cupertino campus with the tagline ‘Let us loop you in,'” Gurman reports. “The event, which was originally internally scheduled for a week earlier, will focus on Apple’s new 4-inch iPhone SE, a smaller, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and new Apple Watch bands.”

“The company will likely also reveal the final versions of iOS 9.3, tvOS 9.2, watchOS 2.2, OS X 10.11.4, and an iTunes update,” Gurman reports. “”

MacDailyNews Take: We’ll be very interested to see how this 4-inch “iPhone SE” does, especially as it’s said to lack 3D Touch (but it does have its Sleep/Wake button in the right place, on the top where it belongs, so that’s a bonus). Another positive is that, reportedly, Apple smartly will not use a “5” in the name of this iPhone.

Everything sounds great except for the name. The “5” makes it seem like old tech, regardless of what’s inside, and the “se” adds unnecessary complexity. If they’re going to round off the case edges à la the 6 and 6s models, with 6/s color schemes available (Space Gray, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold), name it using a “6,” at least. — MacDailyNews, February 13, 2016

  1. If the article is accurate, this would be the most boring Apple event ever. It makes me wonder if there’s something that the rumor mill hasn’t picked up on yet.

      1. Right, a snoozefest.

What would be the point of watching Cook tell us how excited he is about his new overpriced feminine accessories, and how Apple has more in the pipeline that will someday be revealed?

Is everyone excited to see how much Apple may have cheapened up the iPhone this time around? What pastel colors will the new low-cost iPhone offer this time?

    1. Actually, not boring at all. I think Apple wants to reestablish the tradition of having an early spring event, so they have one every quarter, with the exception of the holiday period, which speaks for itself.

The smaller iPhone serves a market that has been waiting for it and will love it. The smaller iPad Pro will be a great addition, really for me the perfect iPad.

New watch bands can be neat…and of course, if Apple releases or allows third party smart bands with functionality that will be big news.

We’ll also get updates on the company, etc…I for one will watch with great interest and it will not be boring to me. Just because it’s not earth shattering like when Steve announced the first iPhone, doesn’t mean it’s not interesting. People get so spoiled these days.

  2. Sigh… I’d love a new Mac Mini at a $499 price point that came with a 128 GB SSD instead of a 5400 RPM HDD and 8 GB or RAM standard. I would buy a ton of those for my school with that configuration.

  3. I LOVE my iPhone 6, but HATE the sleep/wake button on the side! I can’t even count how many times I’ve accidentally turned the phone off when trying to use the Volume + button to take a picture. It’s just in the wrong place. Now, not that I’d EVER use Android, LG makes a phone where the sleep/wake button is on the BACK of the phone- it’s pure genius! Works REALLY well. I wish Apple would steal this idea…
