“Tech giant Apple has sought permission from the government to import pre-owned iPhones for sale in India, Parliament was informed today,” The Times of India reports.

An application from Apple regarding import of certified pre-owned iPhones for sale in India and manufacturing certified pre-owned iPhones for sale in India has been received in the ministry of environment and forests. — India telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad

“The minister further said the government has not taken any decision on the matter,” The Times of India reports. “Recently, Apple has also sent an application for approval to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) for setting up retail outlets in India. India is one of the fastest growing handset markets globally and is poised to overtake the US soon.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we’ve always said: Apple’s Certified Refurbished is better than rivals’ “new” products. Apple sells Certified Refurbished products in the U.S. and many other countries around the world. If approved, this will help make the iPhone more affordable in India which is good for both Apple and smartphone users in India.

      1. A I have said, BRIC is an illusion created by China. There is only China.

It is sad that most of the third world remains so only because of greed and corruption. The only way out is to build their own market economies. Only China is doing this. ICal this, despite all the bright boys in the Ivy League and our rigged economy (as Berinie says), doing the meme about China failing economy, China is on the cusp of the1950 ‘s experience in the USA.

Hopefully China stays the course and are not infected by the blight coming out of the ivy leagues.

        1. Bunch of mambo jumbo….

Bottom line, the government will pursue efficiencies. The workers are not going to be cut with no recourse.

As far as corruption goes, true there will always be but not enough anywhere close to affecting the economy.

Just watch, let me know in five years. In five years, China GDP will be 14 trillion. India – two trillion. In five years let us see who the ignoramous is.

Look at a salary study for Shanghai by Gemini resources. Compare those salaries with India. I believe India will boom, only if the workers get their fair share. Anything else will take millennia.

        1. Apple Certified Refurbished Products are pre-owned Apple products that undergo Apple’s stringent refurbishment process prior to being offered for sale. While only some units are returned due to technical issues, all units undergo Apple’s stringent quality refurbishment process.

          Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:
is fully tested (including full burn-in testing).
is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testing.
is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection.
is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new boxes, etc.).
includes the operating software originally shipped with the unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each products “Learn More” for more details.
is given a new refurbished part number and serial number.
is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.

Preowned means is was sold by Apple or an Apple reseller.

  1. Good for the planet: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Good for new customers, who get good products at good prices.
Good for pre-owners; it is why Apple can buy-back phones.
    And good for Apple.

A number of people who buy Android phones just want a basic phone & text machine. Older iPhones are perfectly suited to these people, too. I am surprised more people don’t talk about it. (It is cheap enough to replace batteries in older iPhones; I replaced batteries in a couple of 3GS phones for $5 each.)

  2. Apple is not seeking permission to sell return iPhones in India, Apple has permission to sell refurb iPhones in India. The deal was sealed about a year ago when the Indian Prime Minister met with Cook in SFRAN. India wanted Apple to manufacture in India. They got a refurb facility that will process about 10 million iPhone 6s in its first year. As the Indian economy grows (its growing faster than China) refurb volume will accelerate. After India comes Indonesia, Kampuchea, Myanmar, Laos, Africa, former Soviet States (including Eastern Europe) and Central/South America.

This is a very smart program, for every refurb unit sold for US$449 (US$50 – US$75 profit each) Apple sold the latest new iPhone for US$649 minimum (US$370 profit minimum). Nobody has the brand loyalty, premium cache as does Apple. Nobody cab refurb cheap ass plastic/last years technology handsets, discount the 30+% and make a profit. And the trade-in program won’t hit its stride until the December quarter of 2017.

    1. Growing faster than China? Even if you are to believe the nonsense on percentage basis (I bet you they are in a recession), definitely will not match even a low 6% growth in China.

GDP in India is 2trillion while in China it is at 11 trillion. China will grow about a trillion a year. How one could believe they are growing faster just shows you how Ignorant one can be!
