“It’s about time,” Dan Moren writes for Macworld. “That was my initial reaction when I heard the report last week that one of the major features of the next version of OS X would be Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri.”
“That’s a long time in the making: Siri debuted on the iPhone 4s back in 2011 — seems virtually ancient, doesn’t it?” Moren writes. “Since then, the voice-activated assistant has been a staple of Apple’s devices, migrating first to the iPad, and more recently to the Apple Watch early last year and the new Apple TV last fall.”
“But the Mac, Apple’s longest running product line, has been left out in the cold. It’s an odd choice, given that most Macs are plenty powerful to handle the computing needs of the virtual assistant,” Moren writes. “That said, Siri’s late arrival on the Mac doesn’t make it an unwelcome one. I’m just hoping that it comes with some improvements.”

Good one MDN.
I haven’t used Echo, but I do have to say, Siri needs to get completely rock solid and reliable. It’s just not there yet, unfortunately.
From the videos I’ve seen online Soundhound’s “Hound” blows Siri, Cortana and Google Now out of the water. I’m not that excited about Siri on my Macbook unless it’s a noticeable step up from what we have now. The biggest advancement for Siri since it’s inception has been the Apple Watch, which makes using Siri more natural and convenient, but software-wise I don’t feel it’s gotten much better.
Still in beta and not yet available at all on iOS so will have to test it when its available I guess and when in a real time environment.
go get a new iOS device, and use your ancient iPhone 4 as an iPod
The finished version 1.0 of Hound was released today:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hound-voice-search-assistant/id1032432287?_branch_match_id=233213031583120429
Compatibility: Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
My first impression is that it’s very promising, though lack of full iOS integration will limit it. Hopefully it will at least push Apple to produce a better Siri.
The benefits of commercial competition!
Siri does not work except for phone numbers and sports facts.
The voice recognition is weak and most commonly, it simply shows you links it generated. It has MILES to go..
well, I can ask Siri to start and stop my workout (via my watch). So perhaps you need to use it a little more pr.
