“In March, Apple intends to announce an updated iPad and smaller-screen iPhone featuring the latest A9x and A9 chips,” Brad Stone, Adam Satariano, and Gwen Ackerman report for Bloomberg Businessweek, citing “a person familiar with the plans, who wasn’t authorized to comment publicly.”
“If accurate, the information would reveal that the new 4-inch iPhone, rumored to be called the ‘iPhone 5se’ or ‘iPhone 6c,’ will be more powerful than Apple’s current mid-range handset lineup, the iPhone 6 series,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider. “Priced starting at $549, the iPhone 6 runs an A8 processor with 1 gigabyte of RAM.”
“The A9 chip in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, meanwhile, has 2 gigabytes of RAM, allowing app data to remain active in the background for longer. The A9 is more than 50 percent faster than the A8 at multicore operations, and nearly 60 percent faster at single core tasks,” Hughes reports. “As for the third-generation iPad Air, the A9X processor found in the iPad Pro is a dual-core CPU with a 12-cluster GPU. The beefed-up chip doubles the graphics power of the base A9 processor found in the iPhone 6s series. The A9X also boasts 4 gigabytes of RAM, doubling the amount of memory in the iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s.”

MacDailyNews Take: If accurate, all the more reason why Apple would be smart to not use a “5” anywhere in the name of their new 4-inch iPhone.
Meanwhile, it sounds like iPad Air 3 is going to be the powerful, full-featured tablet for which many have been waiting!

A regurgitated iPhone with used parts, and a still hobbled iPad that does little more than the original iPad did when it was released some 6-years ago.

Not sure whether more power will convince users with older iPads to trade up. Most of the people I know are getting mail, browsing the web, but mostly playing solitaire. Apple is still missing the killer app that will requires power. Any suggestions as to what that app will be.

There are many musicians creating wonderful and complex music with the 1000’s of iPad music apps which include, synthesizers, DAWs, various FX, drum machines, and amp simulators etc. Many apps now require 64 bit processors and I have been barely getting by with my iPad 3. I will gladly update to the next updated iPad.
My older iPad 3 definitely needs replacement. I know many of the issues I do have (Safari crashing while pinch/zooming) are related to not enough memory. The original snap to the OS is not there anymore either. Still usable but time to go. I will take the opportunity to look at the iPad Pro as well but the larger size may not work well for my normal iPad uses. We’ll see…
I’ve been using my iPad 2 for a third monitor. sticking all the pallets from illustrator and Pages on them. The old Pages btw, as I won’t be using the new watered down version. They had a good start with Pages and dropped the ball. It had promise. Anyway, I’m using Air Display and keeping it plugged in a USB port on my MacBook Pro and it works great. No lag. Occasional crash but not bad at all.
As long as it is a 4-inch iPhone they can call it the 3GSE for all I care. Can’t wait to be able to use an iPhone one-handed again!
