Apple to launch sales of 4-inch iPhone 5se and iPad Air 3 on March 18th

“Apple is currently on target to start selling its next iPhone and iPad models the same week that the new products are introduced in March,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“Apple is currently planning to introduce a new 4-inch iPhone dubbed the ‘iPhone 5se’ and a new iPad Air at an event on Tuesday, March 15th, then put the products up for sale online and in retail stores as early as Friday, March 18th, according to sources,” Gurman reports. “Apple is unlikely to offer pre-orders for the new devices, according to sources who cautioned that the plans could still change.”

“While the iPhone 5se’s body will be nearly identical to the 2013 iPhone 5s, the new smartphone is said to include Apple’s latest A9 and M9 processors, an NFC chip for Apple Pay, support for always-on Siri activation, the iPhone 6’s camera system, and the ability to take Live Photos,” Gurman reports. “The iPad Air 3 is said to include a Smart Connector and support for Apple-branded accessories, which could mean that updated Smart Keyboards and Apple Pencil support for the 9.7-inch device are in the pipeline.”

MacDailyNews Take: If that iPad Air gets iPad Pro features, including Apple Pencil, Apple Smart Keyboard, and the full complement of multitasking capabilities, they’re going to fly off the shelves! If you want one, assuming Appel follows their stellar model of making approximately three units per store for launch day, start thinking about what you’ll need to set up camp outside the nearest Apple Retail Store.

  1. 5 minutes after pre-orders begin, they go on back order for weeks and aren’t on store shelves on release date. Who disagrees?

MDN, they have to reach the shelves to fly off. The iPad’s may though.

  2. Ipad better have the pencil support right off the bat or its not flying off the shelf .

New Small iPhone and a 3 year old form factor? it will be another poor decision by apple..imho
It should look like a fresh product.. Not just fresh specs…..

    1. Why would a new small iPhone be a poor decision? Not every product has to generate more revenue than the IRS. Sometimes it is enough to just make a fortune. People remember the iPhone 5c as a media and Wall Street failure and forget that it made its manufacturer more money than any other phone on the market at the time but the 5s.

Some 40% of all current iPhone users have a 4″ screen or smaller, about as many as have 4.7″ screens (the rest have 5.5″). If only half of those upgraded to a 5se, that is one heck of a lot of revenue. Not as much as if Apple sold big phones to all those people, but a lot more than if it did not sell anything. Even if the profit on individual phones is smaller, the revenue from Apple services will be exactly the same. Hooking people into the ecosystem is surely better than leaving them outside.

      1. I think you misunderstood me… I have been a HUGE proponent of a smaller iphone and a 3 size lineup from the get go… Written to Apple about this god knows how many times… Even when Steve was alive.

My objection is about Apple using an old (5s) design on a new fresh product. Its a bad move…..if its true?
But all these are rumors … Lets see what unfolds. .
