HBO Now has 800,000 paying subscribers since April launch

“HBO Now has gained about 800,000 paying subscribers since it launched on Apple TV in April, contributing significantly to the 2.7 million net new HBO customers last year,” The AP reports.

“The figure was revealed by HBO CEO Richard Plepler in a conference call following the release of parent Time Warner Inc.’s quarterly earnings results,” AP reports.

In April, HBO Now became available to Apple device users with bout 2,000 titles. The service costs $14.99 per month.

MacDailyNews Take: That’s about 100,000 subscriber additions per month since April and nearly one third of all of HBO’s subscriber adds over the time period. Not too bad!

  1. This is really great new! Feels a little like when iTunes was first building momentum and the record labels realized they could actually make money with digital sales in addition to CD sales. And we all know what happened in the ensuing years…. *devilish grin*

  2. Nice!

Anybody know if they’ve fixed problem with playback on a Mac? I tried it out last year for a few months and ended up cancelling it as the picture quality was crappy on my Mac mini (which drives my HDTV) and Mac Pro. Example screenshots here:

Same content when watched via Amazon Prime (they have older HBO series) is significantly better looking:

  3. What would be much more useful would be to see the total number of new HBO customers signed on, because I suspect that a fair number of that 800k may be people who canceled their HBO subscriptions from cable and satellite companies to sign up for it.
