“Sony went into the crucial holiday 2015 sales season boasting 30.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold around the world, and emerged with another 5.7 million units sold,” Jason Evangelho writes for Forbes. “This means that as of January 3, 2016, Sony’s unstoppable PS4 has chalked up 35.9 million in global sales. And that figure is ‘sold through’ not merely ‘shipped to retailer.'”
“While Microsoft seems content to brag about the number of hours Xbox Live users logged and now shies away from publishing console sales, Sony is playing to their strength,” Evangelho writes. “That strength is that they’ve unarguably won the so-called console war, and they’ve got the hard statistics to back it up.”
“Meanwhile, Sony delivered a double dose of staggering statistics by not only divulging the 35.9 million sales total for the PS4 itself, but also noted that during the 2015 holiday period (which Sony defines as November 22 through January 2), they sold a whopping 35 million PS4 games,” Evangelho writes. “That’s across both physical retail stores and digital sales via the PlayStation Store. That is just PS4 titles and doesn’t include PS3 or PS Vita.”

36 million really doesn’t seem like that large of a number relatively speaking. It may be #1 in consoles, which is great and all, but it’s not dominating the living rooms.
When you consider that households will probably have multiple tablets/smartphones/computers vs just one Playstation 4, it seems pretty impressive. 36M is still a nice chuck of the ‘living room device’ market which I consider to include Chromecasts, Apple TVs, other streaming devices and competing game consoles.
Right, and likewise, the average household has more than 3 TVs in the US. 36 million is a tiny fraction of households let alone overall TVs around the world.
It’s not that the revenue from 36 million units wouldn’t be nice to have, it’s that there are still lot of vacant HDMI ports out there waiting to be filled.
What a shame. Microsoft still hasn’t recouped on its ten billion dollar initial investment yet. The massive red ring of death saga indefinitely postponed that from previously happening.

My last 2 months were “network troubleshooter” at the top of the list with zero games played. All my game time is on ps4 or PC.

An estimated 14 million Xbox Ones have been sold. This is well behind the 36 million PlayStation 4’s.

Oh dear someone is upset that simple truth is being reported at all and despite those facts are actually stated by a body not related at all to this site. But then Microsoft and it’s mindless cronies and clones have long tried to manipulate the facts, after all it’s the very tactic that made the company it’s millions in the first place so why would they change.
Is Microsoft still trying to work off their investment in Surface? Anything that eats away at their cash cache is great news.

Xbox One (No, no the first one, but we call it “one”, even though it is number 3. Since 3 is less than 360, we couldn’t call it that…)

Of course Apple is guilty of this too. First there was iPad and then iPad 2. What comes after the iPad 2? What Apple called the “New iPad”. Now when the iPad 4 came out, which one do you think my employer gave me? With the “New iPad” and the “iPad 4” out, they picked the “new” one. I am sure a lot of consumers did the same thing. (I sold that one for $25 off retail.)
It’s good to see Sony have a successful product niche again. Let’s hope their Marketing-As-Management stays out of the way and lets the company become creative again.
I bought an XBox One this holiday season. Was really on the fence on which one to get and decided to wait to see what each company released for the holidays.
For the same price as a PS4 with 500 gigs of storage you could get an Xbox One bundle with 1tb of space.
90% of the games on the current gen consoles are available for both PS4 and XBO and MS flat out had the better holiday pricing this year vs. Sony.
Will be interesting to see the numbers on how many Xbox Ones MS actually moved.
Funny how two years ago Sony was killing Microsoft now its evident and we still have fanboys saying Xbox one is the best, it can be the best if that’s what you prefer but 36 million people say PS4 is what they choose so how can anyone argue with those huge numbers, and biased or not xb1 was junk this time around shitty graphics slow UI always updating because they have no idea what they even want this time around.
