Apple’s official Smart Battery Case is engineered specifically for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 to give users even longer battery life and protection.
It features soft microfiber lining on the inside which helps protect the iPhone inside, while the soft elastomer hinge design makes it easy to put the case on and take it off again. On the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in the hand.
With Apple’s Smart Battery Case, users can charge their iPhone and battery case simultaneously for increased talk time up to 25 hours, Internet use up to 18 hours on LTE, and even longer audio and video playback. With the Smart Battery Case on, the intelligent battery status is displayed on the iPhone Lock screen and in Notification Center, so users know exactly how much charge they have left. (Testing conducted by Apple in October 2015 using production iPhone 6s units and software paired with preproduction iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case units and production software. Video tests consisted of repeated playback of a 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Internet tests were conducted over 3G, LTE, and Wi-Fi networks using a dedicated web server, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages and receiving mail once an hour. Talk time tests were conducted by placing a cellular phone call. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network for all but the Internet 3G and Internet LTE tests; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. All battery claims depend on network configuration and many other factors; actual results will vary.)
The battery case supports Lightning accessories, such as the Lightning to USB Cable (included with the iPhone) and works with the iPhone Lightning Dock (sold separately). Choose from two complementary colors: Charcoal Gray or White.

No, make the phone thinner then offer for a case that feels like a phone. I can imagine in two years that a phone/batterycase combo would be the same thinness and weight of the current phone.
The same way they offer three capacities of memory now, they could offer three capacities of battery.
Apple releasing this says to everyone that longer built-in battery life is NOT a priority for future iPhones, but relegated to an accessory. It’s also saying you to choose between battery life or nice-looking colours (why bother with gold if you’re going to cover it with a black or charcoal coloured battery case?).
The bulge design is very un-Apple though, I can barely believe they made this! You’d think they’d go the way Morphie and others have, with the back smoothly rounding into the phone edges or something. One picture hints at why the top isn’t smoothed, since it bends back in order to let the iPhone slide in, but that doesn’t explain the side or bottom. Heck, if they used the sheeted battery concept from the current Macbook to smooth the back out, it wouldn’t even need to be as thick to get the same external battery life.
They could have made it silicon and had filled in the gap of the bulge and at least made it a curve or something. This is just ugly.

This is Apple admitting that there is a market for longer battery life. Why keep making them thinner and not extending the battery life. Why not offer models with different sized batteries?
This case is awful, could they not have made the back flat and have the battery cover the entire thing, or made it slimmer and flat. That bump is terrible.
I was thinking that. However the idea is a better bet than having thicker phones at least beyond it is now. But i am getting worried about some of these Apple designs of late they are looking very non Apple like and unimaginative very cost* over design ethic. (Well at least cost for them to make to maximise profit.)
For $99 I’d expect something much better looking than this. It almost looks like a regular silicon case and someone has just jammed in a battery and stretched it.
This way it doesn’t interfere with the camera like all the other thick cases do – nobody ever mentions it but you just can’t take a good picture with the thick cases and especially with the flash. This is a smart move – I like it.
If that was truly a concern, smart would’ve been to keep the same top but make the side and bottom taper to the edges smoothly, not add 4 corners to the bottom.
People often accuse Apple of form over function. Here they’ve gone the opposite extreme, when a middle approach would’ve been perfect.

If Apple needs only that much more battery to over double everything then just make the iPhone few millimeters thicker so we can also have a fantastically better camera in to it.
I have to admit I’m a little flummoxed by this rather odd choice of a bump in the back instead of it the entire back surface being flat. I’m guessing they wanted the edge to look thin-ish. But it’s just not right – not for Apple.
That hump keeps the base of the phone thinner so you can still put the phone in one of those combination clock and charging base station units that have a ridge in the back to keep the phone upright in the charging dock……
Just make the whole phone 3mm thicker and use all of it for battery.
Aesthetics is overshadowing function.

Making the back thicker all over to make it “flat” might impact the camera.
They could’ve kept the top area thin as possible (which it already is to allow bending back to slide phone in), and smoothly tapered the rest of the sides and bottom to meet at the edge. If they’d done that they might have even been able to keep the same battery volume while decreasing its thickness.
I think it looks fine. I also think thin and light as standard configuration for the iPhone, with an optional battery pack as needed for special occasions is the correct design path.
If they find this acceptable why don’t they release a phone like it? Make it as thin as possible where they can and have the battery protrude out of the back. They don’t do it because it’s ugly.
I was already thinking of getting the larger phone next time. Battery life was one of the considerations. The immediate first impression on this thing is UGLY!!!!!!

That is the ugliest Apple accessory I’ve ever seen. Screw thinness and add a few mm’s for a bigger battery. Like many others, I just don’t get the obsession with size and weight.

There you go! This is for all those people who complain about Apple making the iPhone smaller instead of doubling its battery life and making it thicker! Now they can make is all happy, by making the next iPhone ridiculously thin with “decent” battery life, and still allow you others the option to double the thickness and battery life! 🙂 genius!
