LG Display to spend about $9 billion on factory for Apple iPhone OLEDs

“Apple Inc. supplier LG Display Co. will spend more than 10 trillion won ($8.7 billion) on building a new plant and expanding production of a newer type of display that can be used to cut power use, make thinner devices and show brighter colors,” Jungah Lee reports for Bloomberg. “Shares rose.”

“The factory will produce organic light-emitting diode displays for larger TVs, smartwatches and automotive displays and is targeted to start in the first half of 2018, Seoul-based LG Display said Friday,” Lee reports. “The technology has been touted as a possible replacement for the liquid-crystal displays used in smartphones. Apple plans to adopt OLED for iPhones from 2018, the Nikkei newspaper reported Thursday without attribution.”

“‘Today’s announcement implies that the potential timing of Apple’s adoption of OLED screens is set,’ said Claire Kim, an analyst at Daishin Securities Co. in Seoul,” Lee reports. “The investment intensifies the company’s rivalry with Samsung Display Co., the dominant maker of OLED panels for smartphones. Samsung supplies the ultra-thin screens to Apple’s key competitor Samsung Electronics Co. and to Chinese phone makers. Apple’s demand for the panels will be strong enough to support more than one big maker, Kim said.”

  1. Sounds good to me, and I’d love to have one of the new LG 65″ 4K OLED TVs, but I’ll have to wait until they drop a wee bit lower than $5,000. Okay, a hell of a lot lower.

    1. Has it ever occurred to you that Apple is “late” to the game because;

      1. The technology wasn’t ready to where Apple wanted it to be and / or

      2. Suppliers don’t have the capacity to meet Apple’s demand for 300 million devices per year?

    2. Not that Cook’s a “Steve Jobs” (something that few actually seem able to grasp and pin down as he moves further from present day man to in the past myth where no one could say what he’d be doing now if he was still here and running Apple in a changing world)…. ….and I’ve always had my own issues with Ive, as I believe too much function can be sacrificed for too much precious design, but then he’s the world’s most famous and successful designer and I’m not for better or worse.

      However, I feel surer and surer there’s not an army of anti-Tims on this board, just one or two (and maybe/likely just one) who keeps changing names as he pounds his little message home….

    3. Sorry Joe you got it wrong….. all the naysayers will be very embarrassed when this quarter is revealed in January… more of the same, record revenues, record profits, record cash flow, record cash balances…….

    1. …or a giant OLED fab apparently.

      Intel routinely spends multi-billions to get its next gen chip fabs, and that’s why you’re not seeing any start-ups in many of these specialized production processes.
