“Apple announced on Sunday that it has struck a deal to power all of its Singapore operations with renewable energy, the latest in a series of steps from the company to turn its operations worldwide green,” Valerie Volcovici and Julia Love report for Reuters.
“Starting in January, solar energy developer Sunseap Group will provide Apple with 100 percent renewable electricity from its portfolio of solar energy systems built atop more than 800 buildings in Singapore,” Volcovici and Love report. “The deal will make Apple the first company in Singapore to run exclusively on renewable energy and marks a significant step in its bid to power 100 percent of its facilities and operations worldwide with clean fuel.”

I’m sure that, in response to this, some readers on this site will accuse Tim Cook of being a liberal tree hugger.
Looking at the 10 day forecast for Singapore (Thunderstorms), I’d kinda like to know more about how their storing energy.
Living in Los Angeles, thunderstorms sound so exotic. They’ve always been my favorite weather.
Heh. Thunderstorms are OK… Except for the really bad ones where the lightning goes over your head and the wind is driving the rain so hard you can’t see to drive.
I prefer the Northern California weather : more predictable 🙂
Typically these deals with utilities are on a “net metering” basis. Apple uses utility-provided power as needed, and however the utility produces it. Apple will sell solar power to the utility as produced. None of the solar power is stored. Apple plans to produce at least as much solar electricity as required by its operations. That is what all this means. It is an efficient use of the grid, solar production, and offsets.
I know it’s they’re and not their, it’s that my fingers have a mind of their own.

Apple will receive 33 MW of the project’s capacity. The project won the backing of Singapore’s development board because it will also provide electricity for public-owned housing, said Jackson.
This gets more and more interesting.
“The deal will cover all of our electricity needs in Singapore, including our 2,500-person corporate campus and new retail store,” said Apple’s VP of environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson. “We’re thrilled to be working with Sunseap and the government of Singapore to pioneer new ways to bring solar energy to the country, and bring Apple even close to our goal of powering our facilities around the world with 100% renewable energy.”
Apple’s solar efforts in 2015 have been bold. The company recently announced plans to add 200 MW of solar PV capacity in China, with a wider 2 GW of clean power planned in the country as it steps up its clean power objectives internationally. At home in the U.S., the company can already claim to be 100% renewable, while globally it sources more than 80% of its power from renewable sources.

I was going to say before reading the story, there’s room in Singapore for a solar panel?
Some people may call it carbon credit, in Apple’s case I would call it good will credit – And that does have value for a company like Apple.
