Rivals line up to target market-dominating Apple Watch

“Apple Watch has the smartwatch market largely to itself, selling millions of units each quarter while its nearest competitors are lucky to sell in the hundreds of thousands,” Patrick Seitz reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

“On Wednesday, research firm Canalys estimated that Apple shipped nearly 7 million Apple Watch units in Q2 and Q3 combined, the first two quarters of availability. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts estimate that Apple sold 6 million Apple Watches during that period,” Seitz reports. “Apple’s closest rival shipped fewer than 300,000 units in Q3, Canalys said. Apple’s rivals include Samsung, Pebble, LG, and Lenovo-owned Motorola. In the second quarter, Apple is believed to have captured 75.5% of the smartwatch market with shipments of 4 million units, according to Strategy Analytics. The research firm put Samsung in second with 7.5% market share and 400,000 units shipped.”

Seitz reports, “Competition is expected to get stiffer as major watch brands Tag Heuer and Fossil (NASDAQ:FOSL) debut smartwatches in the fourth quarter, Canalys analyst Chris Jones told IBD.”

    1. I sure your going to hear a lot from the Android fans about how it will dominate Apple. Funny thing Samsung, the second largest seller, doesn’t use it. They use Tizan. They tried Android then went back to Tizan. I tell people the Apple Watch is a cross between a Casio and a Swatch. I know it’s more, but it’s easer for them to understand. So far no one has got style and personalization except Apple. I was showing my Watch to someone and there was an Android fan next to us. I said it could do text, and the person got excited. The A fan said “you can just read them, you can’t reply. When I showed them how easy it was to send a text the A fan’s jaw dropped and he STFU. It was priceless.

  1. Make that 7 Million plus 1. I just received my Apple Watch as a gift from my wife. So I now have two watches. One Rolex, which should last me a lifetime and my first Apple Watch.

Note to rivals: It’s OK, I’m good for a while but good luck with that.

    1. Quite the jerk aren’t you. I think he makes a valid comment about past, present and his future. As a businessman I like to hear what people think and their spending habits. It also shows he’s willing to pay for quality products.

You must be an Android phone owner.

  2. this scenario is going to be way worse for the competition than in phones and iPads. The smaller the form factor the more difficult to replicate. That’s why Apple took so long to switch to bigger phones, because android handset manufacturers had to supersize because they could not miniaturize.

  3. I can find at least a dozen articles telling how the AppleWatch is a failure and how sales fell way short of what they were supposed to be. It’s sure short of the 30 million units someone expected Apple to sell this year. I know at one point someone mentioned a number as high as one hundred million a year. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is Wall Street sees AppleWatch as being a sales failure and that basically is seen as an additional anchor to Apple’s value. I believe Apple is doing as well as any smartwatch manufacturer can possibly do. However, the entire smartwatch market appears to be very limited in terms of sales.
