Early Apple TV App Store sales show app prices higher than iPhone and iPad, popularity of games

“The new Apple TV has been available for three days now, with response to the product generally strong with seemingly good sales, based off some talks with Apple Store employees,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac.

“A big part of the appeal of Apple TV is the tvOS App Store,” Mayo reports. “The Top Charts and Categories are currently unaccessible. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has worked around this by accessing the web chart data directly, by spoofing the Apple TV headers when making the request. He has posted the Apple TV US Top Paid, Top Free and Top Grossing charts as of yesterday. There’s some interesting trends in the data.”

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, games dominate both Top Paid and Top Grossing charts,” Mayo reports. “A big trend is that the pricing on the non-free apps is significantly higher than the iOS equivalents. Pricing in the range of $5-$10 for AAA titles is the norm with very few apps priced at the iPhone App Store trademark 99 cent price point.”

MacDailyNews Take: Pricing is likely to come down as we saw with the introduction of iPad, whose apps were considerably higher-priced to start, but worked their way down down as the number of apps and competition proliferated.

  1. What always amazes me about the nature of this type discussion is the implied concern that the prices are too high. If you go to a movie, the cost is around $15 to $20 with popcorn and coke. This is a one shot deal where apps you continue to use.

      1. As a consumer I feel obligated to look for the most bang for my buck. For a developer I depend on them to be honest and have decent enough business acumen to take care of themselves and consider long term goals. If we can’t see eye to eye, I can be patient. 🙂

  2. Give this brand new app store to mature for a period of time. If you remember, in the early days of the iOS app store, app prices were sky high, with the average prices many times higher than the are currently. It will take a bit of time, but I’m confident that Apple TV app store prices will “get real” as soon as there are more apps availablle and competition between apps ramps up. When this finally happens, our desires for affordable bundles may become a less important factor, too.
