“On Tuesday, Apple updated its line of iMacs with some nice-to-have display and input technologies that you won’t find on other consumer desktops,” Geoffrey A. Fowler reports for The Wall Street Journal. “Apple is adding ultra-high resolution 4K Retina screens to its 21.5-inch iMacs, and making 5K resolution standard on larger 27-inch iMacs. Those displays also now show a 25% greater range of colors, making photos look more detailed and eye-poppingly vibrant.”
“Larger iMacs are also getting boosted graphics capabilities and a new faster kind of Intel processor called Skylake,” Fowler reports. “And for the first time since 2010, Apple redesigned its Magic line of keyboards, mice and trackpads to do a few more tricks, like recharging with the same cord used by the iPhone.”
“The iMac’s new input devices solve a headache with past Apple mice, keyboards and trackpads: having to constantly throw out their batteries. The new models contain sealed rechargeable batteries that you juice up using the same Lightning plug as an iPhone,” Fowler reports. “Apple reports all three can go for about month on a single charge, and the mouse can give you a nine-hour day’s worth of pointing and clicking with a two-minute charge.”

Not in the market for an iMac, but I kind of wish I was now.
Why no fingerprint reader on the trackpad or keyboard? Why sealed batteries?

Hmmmm thanks Ripabo I do see the skylake note but why no USB-C and especially no Thunderbolt3?
Not including USB 3 (C or otherwise) is very curious considering that the MacBook ONLY has USB 3/C.
Fortunately, you don’t need a new iMac to use those new peripherals. It’s about time they put rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries in them. With rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries, I have to change the batteries on a monthly basis. Plugging in a Lightning cable will be a lot easier than swapping out batteries and charging up depleted ones, especially since I have a Lightning cable for my iPhone on my desk anyway.

Right? I use the Apple rechargeable batteries at work and at home..and I go way longer than a month before I have to swap to the pair that is in the charger. Apple recharge set includes a charger and 4 AA batteries..so no downtime at all.
I work 10-12 hours a day, 5 days a week..and am scrolling like crazy on my Magic Mouse (read EEGs)…and the work mouse last at least 2 months. My home setup..even longer. I don’t turn them off either.
That said, the flimsy battery cover is a problem..so nice that won’t be an issue. There are lots of “mouse slammers” out there..
Best feature of the new Trackpad IMO is that it’s bigger than the previous one. Larger as a unit, and without the non-Trackpad space at the top.
I like it very much.
I like how they managed to update the 5K iMac processor, yet the option to go with a proper GPU that supports the industry standard CUDA is continuously ignored. I bet the forthcoming macpro update will remain AMD-only, as well.
Can you guys clue me in wrt Bluetooth, please?
With newer iOS devices Apple is using BT 4.2 while the spec page for the new iMacs shows BT 4.0.
Is there any advantage to keeping 4.0 (price?) over the newer 4.2?
