“Apple on Tuesday gave its desktop computer lineup a refresh with ultra-high-definition 4K and 5K displays. Apple updated its entire iMac family and started selling the new computers in its stores, online and through select resellers,” Patrick Seitz reports for Investors’ Business Daily. “The new iMacs feature more powerful processors and graphics as well as redesigned keyboards, mice and track pads.”
“The 4K display on the high-end 21.5-inch iMac features 9.4 million pixels, 4.5 times more than the standard 21.5-inch iMac display. The 5K display on the 27-inch iMac has 14.7 million pixels, 7 times more pixels than an HD display,” Seitz reports. “Overall, we view the updates as a slight positive and believe that Apple will continue to gain share despite muted PC market dynamics,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani said in a research report Tuesday.”
Seitz reports, “He rates Apple stock outperform, with a price target of 150.”

No 4/5 K Thunderbolt monitor…?
I know, right? This is incredibly disappointing, and a missed opportunity. There’s a world of graphics designers out there who drool over displays like this. Customers shouldn’t be forced into buying an iMac just to get this kind of display.
The fact that the current Thunderbolt display is STILL $999 is baffling.
All excited….. but then saw the same chassis and so on.
Bit of a yawner.
No wonder they did not make mention of them last month.
What? Same chassis? The form factor was updated just recently and there was no expectation for a new look. The real important news was the 4K iMac and the Magic peripherals.
New Retina came with pre Gen Intel tech?
Apple says they are improved, but still same engine (gen of CPUs), also OLD USB connectors, what the hell?
Nice would have been that the base was contactless charger for accessories.
The are the “best in their class” but hardly leading edge. At this prices I would have expected
-New Gen CPUs
-At least some USB-C
-Base with contactless charger for accessories/Even my watch
-Fusion drive that was not a step back,
or in the base price a 256 SSD
I see the I-Mac for $999 does not have a quad core. AND you CAN’T configure it that way for an extra cost. MY 2012 iMac DOES HAVE a quad core.. And Apple changed the newer ones so you CAN’T upgrade the memory? Am I right that NONE of the iMacs are able to be opened at the bottom, so you can upgrade?
I hope Apple upgrades this…. I don’t want to look for a Windows/Intel iMac like machine when I upgrade. Do tests show my old 2012 quad core runs faster than what Apple sells now? Come on Apple, I’m a customer who wants to give you their money. But I WON’T buy just cause it has a Apple on it. I love my iMac mini. Upgraded to 16G mem. Does what I want. The “New” ones…..No.
You have always been able to upgrade 27″ iMacs with after market RAM. Heck, you don’t even need a screwdriver anymore- just press a button next to where the power cable plugs in to the back of the iMac and the RAM cover pops-out. Put in the new RAM and pop the cover back on – very simple.
The older style used to have a “chin” plate below the front edge of the computer that you would have to remove with a screwdriver, but even that cover had a self-capturing screw so you could not lose it – very elegant.

Do you have software that needs or uses Quad Cores? Do you know that new Dual Core iMacs perform worse than your old Quad Core? Do you know that iMac is spelled iMac and not I-Mac? You sound like a Windows user who is fixated on specs and has no clue about performance for the tasks you need.
And still they’re selling the Thunderbolt monitor with USB2 and no 4K or 5K display. WTF! And they’re still charging $999 for it. Anyone buying a Thunderbolt display now is getting ripped off.
The soldered ram in the 21.5 incher has my decision made up! Apple has to stop doing that crap! They were doing pretty good in and around 2004 or so and opening up more and now we are going back down the gutter and making everything proprietary and not user replaceable. I’m certified and don’t even want to work on them anymore because of the proprietary crap. To a point I understand that is the only way to keep pushing the envelope, but there is no reason not to be able to put a door in the rear like the larger model has for a ram upgrade. No reason for a glued on screen either, magnets are more than enough.
I agree- the iMacs don’t have to be that thin, but they are and they are stunning to look at if they are on or off.
And being “certified” you would know that the RAM is replaceable on the 21.5″ iMac, but you can’t get to it because the hinge that holds the display covers the inside of the casing above where the RAM sits – in the 27″ iMac there is a room for the door.
As for the magnets, they add thickness and weight. Was it necessary to make the iMac that thin? Nope, but they cut the weight of the 27″ iMac by roughly 33% and gave it a 5K display – that’s amazing.
I too wish the iMac was thicker so it could handle a beefier graphics card, but that is not what it is designed for. The hardware and software work incredibly well together at a very low power draw for such a powerful system.
I wonder if their is a car forum for people complaining about how expensive or difficult it is to upgrade their AMG Mecedes? There probably is…

Exactly. No need to downplay the importance of the “small” new features. The retina display is exactly what a lot of potential iMac buyers have been waiting for to upgrade.
Shame about the nickel & diming of the Fusion Drive and the 5400 rpm HD.
Apple won its crown by introducing new technology even in the consumer end of the market. It drove the whole market.

I made a mistake. I never said Mac Mini. that’s what I meant. I have to have the quad core, as for as I know. Sorry all I said was about the Mini. Which should be available with a i7 quad, and upgradeable mem.
