Apple CEO Tim Cook to receive Human Rights Campaign’s ‘Visibility Award’ on October 3rd

Via press release, the Human Rights Campaign has announced, verbatim:

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced that Apple CEO Tim Cook will receive the organization’s Visibility Award at the 19th annual HRC National Dinner on Saturday, October 3, 2015, in Washington, DC.

“Tim Cook is a visionary whose leadership of Apple has been nothing short of remarkable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “His willingness to bravely and directly speak his truth has not only given hope to countless people around the world, it has saved lives. Through his example and Apple’s commitment to equality, LGBT young people in particular can look to Tim Cook’s incredible career and know that there is nothing holding them back. They can dream as big as their minds allow them to, even if they want to be the CEO of one of the world’s largest companies. HRC is honored to welcome Tim to our National Dinner.”

As head of one of the most innovative and creative companies in the world, Cook’s personal and professional contributions to equality are deeply significant and impactful. As an openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company, Cook continues to have an enormous impact on Corporate America and beyond. This past year, Cook has consistently lent his powerful voice to the fight for full LGBT equality by supporting pro-equality legislation, and most recently helping to fight back an onslaught of state-level anti-LGBT legislation – most notably in the high-profile fights against notorious so-called “religious freedom” bills in Arkansas and Indiana. He has been a consistent supporter of federal LGBT non-discrimination legislation, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple was one of the earliest major corporations to come out in support of the Equality Act – a landmark federal bill that would guarantee explicit, permanent protections for LGBT people from discrimination in many of the most important aspects of their lives.

During his tenure, Apple has remained a strong leader in advocating for LGBT equality. In 2002, Apple was one of only 13 companies to earn a perfect score of 100 percent on HRC’s inaugural Corporate Equality Index, a landmark national benchmarking tool that measures LGBT inclusion in the workplace. It has maintained a perfect score every year since.

The 19th annual HRC National Dinner, which is sold out and expected to draw over 3,000 guests, will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. As previously announced, Vice President Joe Biden will deliver the keynote address. In addition, seven-time Emmy Award winner Allison Janney will present HRC’s National Vanguard Award to Academy Award nominated actress Ellen Page for her courage and leadership. Retired NBA athlete Jason Collins and Blossom Brown are also slated to speak. Multi-platinum selling Grammy nominated singer and songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen, and multi-platinum selling Grammy award-winning A Great Big World – joined by Hip-Hop artist Futuristic – will perform. More information is available at www.hrcnationaldinner.org.

  1. “Transgender” is a mental illness and the people suffering from such delusions need mental help, not unsafe sex hormones and disfiguring surgery. Story, Bruce, you’ll never be a woman.

    1. It’s apparent that there is disagreement in the health care and psychological services profession, as well as among the readers of MDN. As for the phrase, “first do no harm,” strictly speaking, it’s not been part of medicine for millenia.

Here’s some information from the Wikipedia entry on the Hippocratic Oath:

It is a popular misconception that the phrase “First do no harm” (Latin: Primum non nocere) is a part of the Hippocratic oath. Strictly speaking, the phrase does not appear in the oath, although the oath does contain “Also I will, according to my ability and judgment, prescribe a regimen for the health of the sick; but I will utterly reject harm and mischief”, in latin “Victus quoque rationem ad aegrotantium salutem pro facultate, judicioque meo adhibebo, noxamvero et maleficium propulsabo”.[5]

Another equivalent phrase is found in Epidemics, Book I, of the Hippocratic school: “Practice two things in your dealings with disease: either help or do not harm the patient”.[6] The exact phrase is believed to have originated with the 19th-century surgeon Thomas Inman.[7]

    1. The American Psychological Association spouts the typical Politically Correct bullshit.

FORMER JOHNS HOPKINS CHIEF OF PSYCHIATRY: BEING TRANSGENDER IS A ‘MENTAL DISORDER . . . BIOLOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE’

At the heart of the problem is confusion over the nature of the transgendered. “Sex change” is biologically impossible. People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder.

For millennia, the first rule of Western medicine has been summed up as “do no harm.” There’s a reason for that.

      1. I really feel for Bruce and others like him. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, just *extremely* confused. Same goes for Mr. Cook.
However, handing out medals to people who promote this sickness as normal is not helpful, but they’re so desperate for applause and affirmation they create these farcical awards as if it’s something to be proud of.
        O_o

Everyone seems to love science all of a sudden (mainly because Google has turned them into ‘experts’) but only when ideologically pragmatic. Scientifically speaking (and yes, I am qualified) homosexual behavior is merely a malfunction of the normal healthy desire to procreate, a desire that is built into every human being. Without it humanity is doomed.
Married couples produce children, aunts, uncles, grandparents. Homosexual behavior produces none of these things, just illusions. The families they create are artificial and it’s so sad that political correctness has allowed them to be so massively self-deluded.
I feel nothing but pity for them.
So go ahead, call me a bigot for stating the obvious truth, but if you do you’ll need to prove that I hate these people.
You cannot, because I do not.

        1. If only everyone could live is a fine healthy heterosexual American family.

There’s just a itty-bitty problem. In those families, a horrible percentage of wives are beaten and/or raped and/or murdered, little boys and girls are raped by fathers, other relatives and friends of the family… insane numbers of husbands and wives engage in adultery… and half are so unhappy with one-another that they get divorced.

          Yehhhhh, “normal” is so wonderful!

  2. I’m happy for T.C for his personal achievement.
Gays don’t bother me but I was just wondering how all this affects Apple as a consumer COMPANY vs T.C’s ‘personal’ achievement.

I did not read a single word about the Human Rights group telling people to buy more Apple stuff because Apple is the good guy.
Apple Stock is performing terribly this year while other companies are zooming along so it’s not affecting the stock positively either.

T.C keeps supporting social causes but it doesn’t seem to have any positive affect on the company AS a company (Apple is a money making company with it’s PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY is the shareholders. Flamers read Apple Board of Directors mission statement item one before blasting me ).

T.C for example continually support Diversity groups as well, even donating Apple money. Yet people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson can praise Apple one day and then the NEXT ask for boycotts and protestors to picket Apple facilities. I’ve NEVER heard any of them or ANY gay rights organizations or green group say “Buy Apple Stuff they are the Good Guys don’t buy xxx android because they don’t give a rats ass for this”.

In fact because apple is so famous they LOVE bashing apple (see all the worker groups attacking Apple ) to GET PUBLICITY.

ON the other hand we see people on the opposite side like Rush Limbaugh continually praising Apple and pushing the use of it’s products. Limbaugh keeps talking about how useful Apple stuff are, how he uses it at home in the office etc. Again I HAVE NEVER HEARD SOMEBODY ON THE OTHER SIDE (the Gay people etc) SAY THE SAME. (I’m NOT necessarily a fan of Limbaugh, I don’t actually listen to him except when he talks Apple, but what i’m stating is the facts).

Personally I say by all means T.C fight for gay rights etc BUT maybe you should play some hardball, he always says “I’m making this statement on BEHALF of APPLE” so maybe he should get some of these guys like Jesse Jackson to SUPPORT apple more (i.e get all their followers to BUY apple stuff).

    1. those people down voting me I would REALLY like to hear your factual arguments to what I’ve written , i.e prove me wrong.

I’m middle ground, neither ultra left or right, but I’m just stating the facts that all the good that T.C is doing for civil rights is not showing on the bottom line.

why don’t all those people like gays and other groups whom he keeps supporting buy Apple Stock for example? the stock should be shooting up if they buy. the gay, Green and diversity groups are super well organized, they will picket anybody at a drop of a hat, the can organize to raise billions for AIDs etc yet like I said I’ve NEVER heard then orchestrate a ‘support Apple’ because they are good guys campaign. Not the teeniest little bit.. T.C says he’s doing it ‘on behalf of Apple’ yet all the rewards are to T.c PERSONALLY as in awards, citations etc, never to apple.

      1. The rewards are for Apple too. Check out the demographic response on the issues TC supports. The youngsters are massively in favour. Therefore they don’t dismiss Apple’s products because of their social opinions, Apple remains a product to aspire to for their age range, and they carry that association for Apple into adulthood as their spending power increases.

Grab the customer when they’re young and they’re much more likely to stay with you.

  3. Maybe if the illustrious TC was less PC maybe the stock would do better. Apple is becoming PC HQ for the tech industry rather that the tech leader for the tech industry. STFU Cook.
