“El Capitan, OS X 10.11, arrives for everyone September 30, but I’ve been using it all summer,” Jason Snell writes for Macworld.
“In these days of free operating-system updates, major OS X updates feel a whole lot more routine than they used to be,” Snell writes. “Apple has chosen not to roll out major OS X features piecemeal throughout the year, though, which still makes this the biggest change your Mac will experience this year.”
“El Capitan, named after the large granite rock formation inside Yosemite National Park, is very much a refined version of OS X Yosemite, a recognizable progression from its predecessor.,” Snell writes. “(In iPhone terms, it would be Yosemite S.) Apple says this update is all about a refined experience and improved performance. But it’s traditional for Apple to take its no-big-deal updates and pour in a bunch of new features anyway, and El Capitan is no exception. This is a packed release, but one that makes sense as a follow-up to Yosemite.”

I expect it will be great – it’s just that this title reminds me of what Scully kept saying when System 7 was first released – which that it was going to be “rock solid.” He is someone who does not conjure up pleasant memories.

“Securely Empty Trash” is gone. Oh well, I only used it for work files, but my company doesn’t mandate it anyway, I just did it as a proactive precaution.
Dear Apple,
Please take two years to release the next version of OS X, instead of releasing a version next Autumn that has to be, “refined” the following Autumn. In other words, let’s get it right the first time. You are not Microsoft.
By the way, I have been using the El Cap beta and it was been a dream come true compared to Yosemite.
Dear Apple,
Please keep doing what you are doing. In effect, EVERY release is an annual refinement, instead of having to wait for two (or three) years for a “mega” update like the old days.
Mountain Lion was supposedly “just a refinement” of Lion; by your schedule, a two-year update was due LAST year. And I would not have wanted to what until this week to get what I got in Yosemite LAST year, if we start counting the two years starting with Mountain Lion.
Just think of EVERY year as a refinement update (with five or so bug fix updates in between). The next one will be about this time next year. If you think El Capitan is a “dream come true” (and you don’t want another OS X refinement next year), then just use El Capitan for the the next TWO years. Apple will keep releasing security (and other) updates during that time (and beyond). 🙂
I upgraded both Macs to the GM build over this past weekend. Both are running great. I didn’t actually have major problems with Yosemite, but I’m very happy when the changes that were made.
If I stay up till midnight will it be available to download? 😉
I suppose it will be available at midnight…somewhere. But maybe not midnight in your time zone. 🖖😀⌚️

The same sucky flat, no-contrast UI? And no hope of skinning it? Funny how the review doesn’t even mention that. I don’t get it how people can just swallow something that hideous and/or pretend it doesn’t matter.
