Local media streaming app Plex coming to Apple TV

“I have Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV Stick, but I never bothered with Apple TV for one and only one reason — lack of Plex support,” Swapnil Bhartiya reports for IT World. “I have purchased a lot of movies, TV shows and music over the last couple of years and I enjoy them on my local network through Plex.”

“I reached out to Plex via email and Scott Olechowski, the co-founder of Plex replied, saying, ‘We are very excited to have a crack at bringing our users Apple TV. It’s been a long requested platform and we’re excited to work on it. We want it, our users want it…and we’re anxiously awaiting the tvOS developer beta info, so we can finally dig in,'” Bhartiya reports. “I further inquired if Olechowski believed that tvOS will allow Plex developers to offer the app to the platform or if there could still be any hurdles. He replied, ‘There is no question we will be able to offer Plex on the platform.'”

  1. I never understood why Apple was the only major manufacturer of a streaming box that didn’t have PLEX support. Was it possible they only wanted consumers to use iTunes as a music and video database? I’d always figured Apple was just being obtuse as they are with so many other things. Like how the heck does local USB support storage harm Apple.

I’d heard there was some minor hack to use PLEX on current AppleTV but, seriously… why the necessity of such a thing. It’s never been a big deal but if Apple had given a decent reason for not supporting PLEX I would have given an OKely-dokely nod and continued to use my trusty Roku 3 which also supports local USB storage which comes in handy from time to time.

  2. Awesome news, especially if tvOS is extended to older (gen 3) AppleTVs as I already have two of them. Now, all I need is Amazon Prime Instant Video support and all of my other STBs will be effectively retired. Hell, I might even cancel part of my cable TV package (at least for rooms other than my family room).
