“One of the most, if not the most, anticipated World Premieres at the 42nd Telluride Film Festival, Universal’s Steve Jobs screened Saturday night to strong response from the Rocky Mountain Labor Day weekend cinema gathering,” Pete Hammond reports for Deadline. “And it was well deserved.”
“Steve Jobs is a riveting tale well told by director Danny Boyle and writer Aaron Sorkin,” Hammond reports. “It’s actually thrilling to listen to, an action movie driven almost exclusively by words, a rare thing for sure in today’s visually driven cinema.”
“Those magical words provided lots of opportunity for great acting 2015 Telluride Film Festivalperformances led by Michael Fassbender’s spot-on and relentless portrayal of the not-very-likable computer genius. Kate Winslet as his trusted confidante and associate, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak are also standouts,” Hammond reports. “When I caught up with him Wozniak told me that, unlike the Jobs biopic with Ashton Kutcher, this one is totally authentic. ‘I saw a rough cut and I felt like I was actually watching Steve Jobs and the others (including Rogen’s dead-on portrayal of Wozniak), not actors playing them, I give full credit to Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin for getting it so right,’ he enthusiastically told me.”

Alas, all is not perfectly accurate. Regarding Sorkin’s “stolen GUI” line:
For more than a decade now, I’ve listened to the debate about where the Macintosh user interface came from. Most people assume it came directly from Xerox, after Steve Jobs went to visit Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). This “fact” is reported over and over, by people who don’t know better (and also by people who should!). It’s definitely a milestone in your life when Seth Rogan plays you in a movie.
Will this be enough to silence the snivellers? It might take actually seeing the movie to accomplish that, I expect.
Tthe perspective belongs to the viewer, especially if its art and not a documentary.
But who actually cares about my crime scene?
Personally, I’d rather the movie were about his return to Apple in ’96. There have already been movies about the start of Apple, but I’d argue that his return is almost, if not just, as important in the history of technology.
Well yes, his return to Apple is where the company began its stellar ascent and we’d all love to watch a movie about it.
The problem for movie makers is, how can an actor’s performance possibly top the real thing? The January 2007 demo of the iPhone was a true “holy shit” moment for the reveal of the phone tech and Jobs’ well rehearsed performance. I mean the video is out there for anyone to see and compare with. What director would be brave or foolhardy enough to try to top that?
To me so far the best portrayal of the period and the individuals involved was in ” Pirates of Silicon Valley ” hands down..
Lets see how this compares…
Like I said yesterday I totally dislike the trailer and hope the movie is better. The trailer just shows the negative aspects of Jobs plus errors in the GUI stolen etc. (Apple bought the tech with stock from Xerox).
I respect Woz for being a founder of Apple.
But note that he wasn’t involved in much of what is now known as apple, his last big Contribution was the Apple ll. (having a plane crash in 1981 he didn’t do much for apple after that and left in 1985), wasn’t involved much in Mac and nothing at all with iPod, iTunes, iPhone, App Store, iPad etc. He has practically no idea how Steve functioned at Next, Pixar or his second tenure at Apple or what happened at the product launches of the iPod etc.

Woz praised MIKE DAISEY’s play attacking Apple “The Agony of Ecstasy of Steve Jobs”
the performer who claimed he witnessed Child labour abuses in China which was later exposed by investigative reporters to be totally fabricated.
Daisey originally claimed everything he said was true and that he met with child workers . At that point Woz said that Daisey’s performance brought tears to his eyes and he was “100% behind Daisey”. .
(( Before his lies were exposed Daisey was incredibly harmful to apple which actually has one of the best labour policies in China. Daisey was interviewed by many news outlets like CNBC, PBS etc as a ‘source’ and his ‘facts’ were used in editorials in the New York Times etc which caused protests against apple worldwide)
When Daisy was exposed as fraud Woz excused his support by saying “I think Mike Daisey got Apple and other companies more attuned to the issue” and he CONTINUED to praise Daisey going so far as going on stage to open his show for him.
NOTE: WOZ is saying IT IS OK to be FALSE if the result IS GOOD.
Woz has often complained about jobs often saying in recent interviews that Jobs didn’t know tech and even that the US Postal Stamp of Jobs alone “forgot the Engineer”.
Just a few days ago Woz said “He did not know technology. He’d never designed anything as a hardware engineer, and he didn’t know software. He wanted to be important”.
But of course Woz knew Jobs personally WAY MORE than I did (which is zero) so maybe the movies portrayal which most critics say is a nasty steve jobs is accurate. Only Jobs OTHER friends like Cook, Cue , Forstall, Oppenheimer and all the early workers etc to can chime in if it’s wrong.
Like I said I hope the movie is better than the trailer but I’ll see the movie before I judge.
Woz comes off as a jealous kid.
Wozniak has previously criticised this film for accuracy: neither himself, nor Jobs behaved or talked like depicted in this film. So the only way to understand Wozniak now is that the film is good enough to believe in what is happening no matter how much fantasy it is.
