“The new Apple TV, as has been reported previously by Buzzfeed, will feature an updated design and Apple’s A8 chip in a dual-core configuration. The more powerful chip will support an updated interface with much better effects and navigational improvements that make browsing through big content libraries — one of my biggest wants — much easier,” Matthew Panzarino reports for TechCrunch. “It stands to reason that Apple will be able to push the A8 much, much further than it ever has before given that the Apple TV is plugged into the wall, and not dependent on battery.”
“This will enable developers of games and other resource-intensive applications to produce higher quality and more demanding apps… To control the new Apple TV? A new remote,” Panzarino reports. “It’s slightly bigger and thicker, with physical buttons on the bottom half, a Touchpad area at the top and a Siri microphone.”
“The new remote will be motion sensitive, likely including several axis’ worth of sensors that put its control on par with a Nintendo Wii remote. The possibilities, of course, are immediately evident,” Panzarino reports. “A game controller with a microphone, physical buttons, a touchpad and motion sensitive controls would be extremely capable. While Apple is likely going to target the broad casual gaming market, I would not be shocked to see innovative gameplay blossom from that type of input possibility. Think, for instance, of multi-player gaming with several people using voice input, or many popular genres of party games that would do far better on the TV than on an iPad or iPhone.”

MacDailyNews Take: Hopefully this remote, assuming it also seems to want to live between the couch cushions like the current Apple TV remote, will also be able to beep when pinged by iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

“Hey Siri, where’s my remote?”
“I’m right underneath your big fat ass.”
For me, it’s more like “I fell between the seats and I’m underneath you on the floor.” I am tired of getting on my hands and knees and looking for the slippery thing under my couch.
More like “I, Siri, AM your remote!”
Here’s to hoping the new Apple TV is more like a iOS desktop that will keep in sync with my other iOS devices since my Mac can’t find its ass with both hands when it comes to playing nice with my iPhone.
If they solve the lag problem then they will have a great device. No need for a new OS. Just use a iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the games on them. You can connect 4 devices together already and have one stream to an Apple TV. The problem is the lag kills the game. A new remote is needed. The current one sucks. I never understood why they did not put a click wheel on it. That would have made things a lot easier. It would be cool if they used the same screen as the Apple Watch.
The remote app on iOS is great. The only issue I have is that you have to unlock the phone to access it. It would be brilliant to have it know the phone or iPad is connected to the AppleTV and bring the controls up front after pressing the home button.
In 2007 I wrote and still believe this, “iPhone: The Ultimate iTV Remote?” (sans the iTV moniker and the “minutes”):
“With all the discussion surrounding Apple and an iPhone device, could an Apple phone turn up as the ultimate remote for Apple’s iTV. Front Row + Apple Remotes are already bundled with Mac hardware. Wouldn’t it seem reasonable that a new phone would provide remote control for the upcoming iTV?
The thought is that a new Apple phone will integrate with iTV as a remote that you can use within the house… never misplacing your phone or remote and be a nearby and available phone to use. I imagine that the phone/remote would pile up the minutes as it would be the first choice of a phone to use while using your home media.
Smart phones are no more clumsy than other (TV, CD, DVD, VCR) remotes. An all-in-one Apple device that simplifies this media experience would be welcome. I’d imagine someone in Cupertino would think so.”
I soooo hope this is true. This would be a new revolution. Around here, we’ve been chatting about all these TV capabilities for maybe two years! It would be nice to see it actually hit the street.
