“Apple revealed details of a highly sophisticated wireless charging system back in 2013 that utilizes near field magnetic resonance (NFMR) power supply,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“It’s likely the long term approach that Apple will eventually introduce,” Purcher reports. “Today a new patent application was published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office that reveals an Apple invention relating to impedance matching for inductive power transfer systems.”
Purcher reports, “Apple notes that the inductive power receiver can be any suitable electronic device including a tablet computing device, phone, personal digital assistant, computer and a wearable communication device, a wearable health assistant (Apple Watch), a smart telephone, or a media player.”

As was alluded to above, wireless charging would make a lot more sense for keyboards and mice. These are stationary devices that can be charging while in use in their natural location without interruption for the user, and actually enhance the user experience by removing the need to replace batteries.
For a phone or tablet, wireless charging is nothing more than a gimmick, and actually make less sense for user experience. At least with a cable you can still hold the device in your hand and use it. With wireless charging you literally are forced to keep your device sitting on the wireless charging pad. Other than being too lazy to plug in a cord, there’s no difference, it’s still sitting there, just even less accessible.
Samsung jumping the gun on getting wireless charging for their phone was a fucking gimmick, not innovation. Innovation makes life easier. Real innovation in wirelessly charging a phone would be if your phone was just always charging from anywhere in your house, just as effortlessly as picking up your home wifi signal.
