“While Apple will unveil a pair of next-generation iPhones at its September 9th event, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, don’t expect a new 4-inch ‘iPhone 6c’ to show up on stage,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.
“Sources say that while Apple has been working on a new 4-inch iPhone with the capabilities of last year’s iPhone 6, the device is not yet ready to ship,” Gurman reports. “Interestingly, Apple has also internally prototyped a new, smaller iPhone with a 3.5-inch display, the same size of the iPhone’s screen from the first model in 2007 to the iPhone 4S in 2011, but it does not appear that the company plans to move forward with actually releasing such a device.”
Gurman reports, “In addition to not releasing a new 4-inch phone, Apple currently plans to discontinue the iPhone 5c upon the release of the new 6S and 6S Plus, according to sources… It appears that this fall’s new iPhone line up will be the following: the 5s as the entry-level device, the 6 and 6 Plus in the middle, and the new 6S and 6S Plus sitting at the top of the lineup. ”

MacDailyNews Take: Fans of smaller iPhones will at least have the iPhone 5s until/unless Apple releases this “new 4-inch iPhone” with iPhone 6-like specs and features.

Personally, I prefer the smaller size iPhone and fingers crossed Apple offers choice in the Fall lineup.

But no news that the 4″ iPhone 6s is not shipping??
I’ve been holding out for a new iPhone (still on the 4). I refuse to get a past-generation version this time. My first iPhone was a 3G, which I bought brand new in 2008, followed by two hand-me-downs…. a 3GS and a 4. Really need an upgrade to the latest and greatest, but not sure if the 6 is the right size. I don’t need or want a really large screen.
Yeah, join the crowd. But it seems that everyone that went with the 6 Plus is very happy with and say they wouldn’t go back to a smaller phone. Battery and camera being better doesn’t hurt, and makes the choice harder.
I hope they do announce a 4 inch iphone in iPhone 6 form factor…
Not only many love the size… A smaller iphone 6 will look real cool . Imho.
If not this year the. maybe next year when most likly they will have a new design .
I hope Apple chooses not to produce Big Ass phones. I resent having to purchase a monstrosity masquerading as a smart phone.

If there is no new “iPhone 6c” with performance specs and technical design shared with the recent surprisingly great A8 iPod touch (6th gen), that would be a shame. Let’s hope “the device is not yet ready to ship” means it will appear at some point, and by that point, it is based on the A9 like the latest “big” iPhones.
If iPhone 6 is continuing “as is” at the middle of the lineup, to create some differentiation, I think it will only be available in the 4.7-inch size (no “Plus”), and no 128GB option. The highest storage option and largest screen size are reserved for the newest flagship.
And I’ll bet that “internally prototyped a new, smaller iPhone with a 3.5-inch display” is NOT the same screen size as the older iPhones. It makes more sense to use a slightly scaled-down version of the iPhone 5S (and iPod touch) 4-inch Retina display (with same pixel count). Like iPod mini is a scaled-down iPod Air. No additional screen size fragmentation. This mini iPhone would be about the same length as the original through 4S iPhones, but narrower. Having a small screen, it has exceptionally long battery life per charge. It would also give “Apple Watch enthusiasts” (future customers who like doing as much possible on Apple Watch) an iPhone choice that is lowest in cost and physical burden.
Long battery is a problem. Size matters. Batteries do not follow Moore’s law of rapidly getting smaller and cheaper. It’s the problem with electric cars. A Tesla can go farther than a Leaf because it is a larger; that also makes it more expensive. Samsung took the easy route by making their phones larger so they could kill Apple on battery life. Apple invested in processors with 64bit and security. Then everyone one else followed Samsung undercutting them in price. It was easy for Apple to increase their size and improve battery life and are way ahead of everyone now.
The one thing that keeps me believing Apple will have a small plastic phone is the colors match their watch bands. It would be cheep and easy to put the 5s in a 5c. Because I live in a hot environment so I don’t where jacket or carry a bag all day. I need a smaller phone.
Long battery life is not entirely about the battery or overall size of the device; it’s about the component that uses the largest portion of available power. The screen. A 3.5-inch screen probably uses about one-third the power of a 5.5-inch screen, when they’re backlit for the same length of time. There is no equivalent component of your Tesla versus Leaf comparison that uses more power simply because its bigger.
Apple will come out with a 3.5 inch phone with a bigger battery on the inside than the 6 Plus . . . using British SiFi technology. 😉
