“Apple has scheduled its annual iPhone debut for Wednesday September 9, a year to the day after 2014’s launch of its latest handset alongside Apple Pay and the Watch,” Tim Bradshaw reports for The Financial Times.
“Invitations were sent out to members of the press and analysts on Thursday morning, California time, bearing the teaser: ‘Hey Siri, give us a hint,'” Bradshaw reports. “When asked for a ‘hint,’ Siri responds with cryptic comments such as: ‘Well, I hear there’s something big happening on September 9’ and ‘Why don’t you check a rumours blog? That’s what I do.’ Fuelling the hype that inevitably accompanies any such launch, Apple fans posted quirky responses from the iPhone’s virtual assistant to social media.”
“Unlike last year’s Silicon Valley-based iPhone 6 event, next month’s unveiling will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The large 7,000-person capacity venue is better known for concerts, playing host to musicians including Janet Jackson, Jack White and Ellie Goulding,” Bradshaw reports. “Alongside a new iPhone, the California-based technology company is expected to reveal its long-awaited revamp to Apple TV, bringing the App Store to its set-top box for the first time and introducing a new remote control”

MacDailyNews Take: It must be “something big” otherwise why book such a large venue?

And why do they need so many days for set up and tear down? What could it possibly be?
Self-driving, Siri activated, Home Kit enabled RVs? “Hey Siri, take me to Orlando and play all episodes of Game of Thrones.”
Hopefully VR not RV. And btw, who drives an RV? I picture a nerdy dude with a transparent colored visor and one of those terrible 90’s Fannie packs with short golfer shorts. Not exactly Apple’s target market.
I was being facetious. It was the most unlikely thing I could think of.
Siri is coming to the Mac in El Capitan. Gotta compete with Cortana 🙂
Maybe something big – like a car!
Gee! That never occurred to me! ;-}
That’s what she said! 😊
Oh, I hope not. Much more I’d rather see…
And excitment builds up…
Apple PR runing on all cylindars … Right on Tim/Phil and all.
🙂
Running
running
No, runing. Don’t you see?
From now on the default alphabet on iOS will be Viking Runes!
No cylinders, it’s electric.
Apple didn’t bump the venue seating by 10/1 for nothing!
I would not be surprised to hear of another major release of an existing product upgrade.
And if something extraordinarily exciting gets announced without prior rumors and leaks, Tim and team deserve another major hats off !
They’re setting up a model house to demonstrate Siri + Homekit
Ouch! If that’s what it is it will be a big disappointment. Not that Homekit etc. won’t be nice but that’s not that big of a deal. I hope Apple is smart enough to understand that.
This is the very same venue (since renamed) where Jobs and Wozniak presented the Apple II at the first West Coast Computer Faire.
I also seem to recall this venue being used for some early Macworld Expos.
Prediction: This will be about home kit, and the new AppleTV as a central hub of home automation.
The extra space in the venue will be used for a “house” which will be built inside the venue and made for attendees to walk through and try the features.
I have been convinced that Apple has been moving this way for a long time.
The AppleTV will have more advanced Siri features to be controlled by your Apple Watch/remote/iPhone/iPad as a central Hub with Home kit.
Tim Cook gave an interview some time ago, where he said he loved controlling his Apple TV with his Apple watch. When the interviewer asked about the Apple TV, an Apple PR person shut the interview down.
This interview seemed to fly completely under the radar.

If Apple finally has the full eco-system ready, Apple TV, Apple Watch and iPhone sales are set to go ballistic.
I think this IS something really really big.
What we need to see is who is invited. Last year they added hi end watch sellers, maybe this year they will invade Auto industry reporters 😉 or Samsung TV Designers LOL
When I asked Siri for a hint, she said, “The colorful wavy lines don’t give it away?”
And in related news, Samsung released a statement saying they will have something big also, but cheaper. Details on September 10.
Thats not the rest of the industries way….they would do it on the 8th to try and beat Apple to the punch then learn what they did wrong in their product as usual.
A further BIG dip in cheaper phone sales again?
You know what would be BIG and make it appropriate for such a huge venue? Apple announcing that they will pay more attention to bugs and the bloated mess that is iTunes and iOS Music.
I still say this goes back to them clearing off the tables and hanging up the iPods. They are making room for something, but what?
Guest appearances by Steve Jobs 2.0 and Elvis?…
Lord A’Mighty. What could it be? Can’t be a new Mac Pro or Apple TV. If it’s a car I hope the thing Apple brings “different” to it is it’s aeronautical ability. The iFly!
And on Sept 10, analysts will cry “Apple is over! Sell! Sell! Sell!”
Yes. RGB, Siri. Voice-controlled streaming TV. (Google “images for TV color bars” and you’ll see the exact colors on the invitation). Finally, a new way to experience TV!! Television reinvented! Apple will change the way we experience TV, using Siri! Big updates for content creation, GarageBand, FinalCut etc. New iPhone camera. Big Apple TV screen (maybe).
This is huge!!!!, as game changing to television as the iPhone was to phones.
The huge venue? A massive concert with live historic big screen TV clip replays of Bob Dylan (“The Times They Are a-Changing”), Sam Cooke (“A-Change is Gonna Come”), Beatles (“All You Need is Love”), Don McLean (American Pie), Cat Stevens (“Peace Train),” Leon Bridges (“Coming Home”), of Elvis (“It’s Alright Mama”), Jerry Lee Lewis (“Great Balls of Fire”), Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Muhammed Ali, Phar. Williams (“Happy”), etc, etc. Dr.Dre and Snoop Dog. Compered by David Letterman.
And one more thing…(tm).
And one more thing…(tm) Apple now owns Swatch.
I hope it’s Apple VR.
“It must be “something big” otherwise why book such a large venue?”
…because Samsung already reserved the first 25 rows!
Predicting iPhones/ iOS 9 alone, no iPads, Macs, or Apple TV (well maybe a new Apple TV, but not surprised if not). The wavy lines simply indicate the Siri interface will match the Apple Watch, the large venue will host a two day free concert promoting Apple Music. Everyone will scream with disappointment.
A tie up with Elon Musk. Apple Space. Siri helps you colonise the Asteroid Belt.
