Samsung stole trade secrets from TSMC to win Apple A9 stamping deal

“In February we posted a detailed report titled ‘TSMC Sues Former Employee for Giving Samsung Trade Secrets,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “The report was about TSMC suing a former employee by the name of Liang Mong-song for giving away their crown jewels to Samsung. With TSMC and Samsung fighting it out for Apple’s business every year, this story was an interesting one being that Samsung came out the winner with Apple, of all companies, rewarding Samsung unknowingly.”

“Today, Taiwan’s highest court ruled in favor of TSMC,” Purcher reports. “So what was the message sent to Samsung by the court? According to a new report published this morning, ‘The Supreme Court on August 24 maintained the determination made by the second-instance court, prohibiting Liang from working for Samsung in any form until December 31, 2015.'”

“A lousy four month ban from working at Samsung is the big scary punishment for giving Samsung the ability to lock down Apple’s chip business,” Purcher writes. “And all the while, the employee has been training Samsung engineers all about TSMC’s trade secrets ‘at a Samsung-sponsored university in South Korea.’ The only students that Liang taught at the university were ‘in fact veteran Samsung employees,’ the report disclosed.”

  1. It seems the world over (U.S., Germany, Taiwan, etc.) the courts are telling companies (and their boards and officers) that it is OK to steal intellectual property and designs. The rights of inventors and innovators is zero.

“Go ahead and steal. If you get any punishment at all, you’ll get a slap on the wrist that is a very tiny fraction of what you made in profits and market share by stealing. Seriously, just go for it.”

If anything can bring human innovation to a grinding halt this is it.

    BUT…
Patent Trolls are still raising havoc and making money at it!

      1. Maybe I’m naive, but I don’t think Apple directly steals trade secrets. I’m sure they do some reverse engineering or copying ideas off of end user products, but I highly doubt they have active secret stealers or that they even talk to the thieves.

      1. We’ve been saying that since Apple sued Sammy. Apple has to be the only idiot company giving their competitor business and profits while being ripped off, laughed at and humiliated in court. Apple is a slut as much as Samsung. Why don’t they just merge and end the joke?

        1. The problem is that the unlimited patent infringement and unrestrained trade secret stealing has made Samsung’s products the absolute best. If Apple ever decides to cut off any ties to Samsung, they’ll be in a competitive disadvantage. It’s the prisoner’s dilemma.

  2. It doesn’t matter if he is officially waiting four months or not. Liang Mong-song is laughing all the way to the bank, whether or not it is officially getting his money on the books.
