Beleaguered Samsung unveils Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5, shares fall

Samsung Electronics, “the struggling South Korean phone maker, unveiled two snazzy new models on Thursday at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City: the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+,” Aaron Pressman reports for Yahoo Finance.

“But there was no sign of a change in approach that might help Samsung claw back the market share it has lost to Apple’s iPhones at the high end and to Chinese competitors Xiaomi and Huawei at the low end,” Pressman reports. “Shares of Samsung, which have lost 14% in the past three months, fell 1% on Thursday.”

“The new Galaxy S6 Edge+ has the same attractive curved glass screen as Samsung’s S6 Edge released four months ago, but with even bigger dimensions,” Pressman reports. “The screen is 5.7 inches measured diagonally versus the 5.1-inch screen on the earlier model. A new Galaxy Note 5 updates last year’s model, which already had a 5.7-inch screen, in a lighter, thinner package.”

“The phones, available on Aug. 21, will go to head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 6+ and its 5.5-inch screen. Of course, Apple is expected to announce an update to the 6+ next month,” Pressman reports. “Samsung also made news on Thursday about its mobile payment app, Samsung Pay, announcing that the service will be available in the United States starting on Sept. 28.”

“Even after the release of the Galaxy S6 Edge earlier this year and its flat-screen counterpart the Galaxy S6, Samsung suffered a 38% drop in operating profit during the second quarter from a year earlier. Its quarterly mobile profits are now less than half what they were just two years ago, at the peak of the company’s mobile dominance in 2013,” Jonathan Cheng and Ryan Knutson report for The Wall Street Journal. “Compounding the pain, Samsung has lost market share in the wake of last year’s release of two hit Apple products, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with its larger screen. Those products cut deeply into Samsung’s dominant position in larger-size premium handsets—a corner of the market that it had mostly to itself.”

    1. I agree. Samsung’s product roadmap and marketing strategy reminds me of the spec wars of the ’80s and ’90s.

Consumers want to know what they can do with the device and what they are getting (quality, service ease of use) for their money. Incremental improvements are no longer the order of the day.

Voice Control (SIRI iPhone 5) thats easy to use and works
Fingerprint Recognition (Touch ID iPhone 5S) thats easy to use and works
Secure Mobile Payment (Apple Pay iPhone 6) thats easy to use and works

These are the improvements that are pushing iPhone sales/adoption ahead of the competition.

    2. It’s very simple.

If you buy an iPhone from Apple, you are a valued customer. Apple wants to make you delighted and happy so you buy another one.

If you buy Android from any company, you are a product that Google has snared with their operating system so that they can sell to advertisers.

Do you want to be a customer or a product?

  1. How does the edge screen do with flexing? Anyone seen one in person? Kudo’s to sammy for doing something with hardware that isn’t a blatant rip-off of Apple…unfortunately for them Apple is in strong command of the high end market and sammy is mucking around at the bottom with the other wannabes. Investors seem to have figured that out too.

    1. I recall an article from a couple of years ago (either on MDN or AppleInsider) that had secret information on how Apple was investigating the curved screen with separate functionality on the side (literally exactly what the Galaxy Edge phones do.) Samsung wasn’t even that original with this concept.

  2. it’s interesting that Samsung is collapsing without any direct Advertising attacks from Apple. Samsung used to hit Apple with direct ads like ‘Wall Hugger’. The tech press too bend over backwards to give slanted good reviews to Android devices as the bulk of their income come from reviewing the dozens of android devices vs the few Apple (they want android to thrive ) .

It seems that Samsung’s consumer base found out BY THEMSELVES that Samsung products suck.

Samsung are like Stonemasons, they make good products like processors if supervised by an architect like Apple but when the stonemasons go try to build a house themselves there are problems…

  3. Maybe I don’t keep up on Samsung enough (but can you blame me?), but isn’t this the same “new” pops phone everyone was talking about in like the spring? I feel like they keep hyping up the same fucking phone over and over. What the hell is different about this than the phone with what I thought had the same exact name and looked the fucking same as this that people said was complete garbage six months ago? Oh well who cares. It’s mostly rhetorical, because I honestly won’t even care enough about the answer to come back and check for responses. Fuck Samsung and all the garbage they pass off as products to ignorant people with money.

  4. Happy news Thursday. Hint to MDN:

US court denies Samsung appeal in Apple patent row

ScamScum’s appeal bullshit is OVER. Here comes the reckoning.

The amount of the compensation that the South Korean technology giant will have to pay will still need to be decided by court.

The decision comes on the same day that Samsung unveiled its latest flagship phones, hoping to turn around its fortunes after a string of disappointing quarterly results.

    😩😪😭👈😆😝😸

  5. When you aren’t able to invent anything, your only option is just to make it bigger…almost iPad mini size. Sorry, that just doesn’t cut it for a phone in my pocket.
NBA post players and women with huge purses might consider it.
They’ll just have to get their hands on the new iPhone 6s before they can copy Force Touch.
When will they get parent Google to give them a 64-bit OS?…even Micro$oft is farther along than Google, who has a terrible OS upgrade loyalty. Samsung is intuitive at refrigerators and washers…I give them that.
