Apple sees iPhone sales boom as other phone makers suffer from demand slowdown

“Smartphone sales may be slowing for some tech companies, but not for Apple,” Brandon Bailey reports for The Associated Press. “Analysts expect another powerhouse performance from the Cupertino tech giant when it reports quarterly financial results Tuesday. Apple’s signature iPhones remain popular, even as other smartphone makers are seeing demand slow down.”

“Wall Street analysts estimate Apple will report a hefty $10.3 billion in profit after selling $49 billion worth of iPhones, iPads, Mac computers and other products during the April-June quarter,” Bailey reports. “That’s an increase of more than 30 percent in both revenue and profit from the same period a year earlier.”

“As in other recent quarters, Apple will reap its biggest rewards from its smartphones, especially the new, big-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models introduced last fall,” Bailey reports. “People use smartphones for social networking, playing games, looking at pictures — far more than they use them to make calls. And for those activities, many users prefer a bigger screen.”

“Several analysts say their studies confirm Apple CEO Tim Cook’s claim that many recent iPhone buyers are people who switched from Android phones,” Bailey reports. “Some consumers were drawn to Android devices in recent years because they had bigger screens, but Apple’s decision to increase the iPhone’s screen size is persuading Android owners to defect, said Ryan Reith, who tracks smartphone sales for the research firm IDC.”

    1. Samedung is getting their well deserved wedgies and pants pulled down in the most embarrassing comeuppance fashion. This Emperor not only has no clothes but defecting followers by the score. It couldn’t happen to a more loathsome, copying, unnovative company in regards to their ‘smart-ass phones.”

  1. Google has seriously mismanaged the Android Brand by allowing crummy products to use Android.

This is a fatal error and I don’t see Android recovering from it.

    1. There will always be a market for cheap junk. The cheaper it is the more people like it. They don’t care about poor quality. They always think the cheaper it is the bigger the bargain. Besides, don’t salesmen still get spiffs for hard-sell smartphones that aren’t moving. They’re happy to keep pushing junk on unsuspecting consumers. I’m sure Apple will gain some greater degree of market share but cheap Android devices are a lure some people simply can’t resist.

Of course, the Wall Street jackasses will continue to say how Android smartphones are just as good as iPhones, not realizing most consumers are definitely not buying flagship Android smartphones. Most are buying mid-tier Android smartphones which are certainly not equal in any way to a basic iPhone.

Earlier today, there was some analyst article modeling relatively flat to zero growth for iPhone in 2016, so there are people still saying iPhone will have next to zero future sales when Tim Cook has clearly stated how only 20% of iPhone owners have upgraded to the new iPhone 6. I’m sure Apple is going to steal market share from Samsung’s high end smartphones, so Apple does have better than zero growth left.

Android will never, never have the profits the iPhone has because Android was established to be a platform everyone can afford and that is like the kiss of death for profits. My only surprise is how Android smartphone makers keep hanging in there when the pickings are so slim. I guess getting a little something is better than nothing at all.

If Apple could ever tap that overseas cash reserve, I think they could create so many added services, it wouldn’t even make sense for anyone to want to own an Android device. As it is, Apple is practically operating with one hand tied behind its back.

    2. So true. Google has failed to manage their brand effectively to give it the essential integrity any brand needs. Being desperately & all over the map does not inspire consumer confidence nor does rampant inconsistency and fragmentation/malware issues help their case. Totally botched and mis-managed without a whit of vision or insight.

So long Android though I know it will be a slow but painful death.

  2. iPhone is the gateway to unlimited music, free messages, video chat… think about the smartphone market 10 years ago and look where we are now. The basic shape of the iPhone hasn’t changed. They nailed it. The secret is in the ecosystem, the free OS updates.

Tempted to buy a new iPod, they really are fantastic devices.

  3. I will buy an Apple Watch for Christmas as I promise to my kid. Apple should think about Apple bike, I probably buy an Apple bike as well if there is one. Oh one more, how about Apple love?.
