Number of iPhone buyers choosing 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus increases to 29% in June quarter

“Americans are going plus-sized … with their iPhones, at least. The percentage of Apple iPhone buyers picking the jumbo iPhone 6 Plus, with its 5.5-inch display, increased to 29% in the U.S. in the June quarter,” Patrick Seitz reports for Investor’s Business Daily. “That’s up from 22% in the March quarter, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners said in a report Wednesday.”

“By contrast, the percentage choosing the standard-size iPhone 6, which has a 4.7-inch screen, dipped to 53% in the second quarter from 56% in Q1, CIRP said,” Seitz reports. “The larger share of iPhone 6 Plus sales is important to Apple because the company gets a higher profit margin on the bigger-screen models.”

MacDailyNews Take: As “Day One” owners of every iPhone flagship model ever made, we can confidently say of iPhone 6 Plus: There is no substitute.

As we wrote back in October:

Unsurprisingly, we have both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus… The iPhone 6 is a beautiful phone. It’s the second best smartphone in the world, in fact. But, lay them both on our desk and we’ll grab the Plus when heading out every time. We can simply get more done with it, the battery lasts far longer, and the camera is superior… All other so-called smartphones pale in comparison to Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus.

  1. Another interesting point from percentage stats. About 1 in 5 new iPhones sold are “small.” In the previous (March) quarter, just as many wanted smaller versus larger.

    1. It would have been interesting if they had rolled out the iPhone 6 in all three sizes, 4″, 4.7″ and 5.5″.
That would have given a true accurate percentage on screen size preference. For now, you have to settle for tech that is one year older than the others to get that smaller size.

Here is hoping the next round has the 4″ added back. Seeing that the iPod Touch has stayed at that size, then many components all ready exist to make a phone also.

      1. In another article, two down from this one, my speculation is that a new iPhone 6C (replacing the current 5C) will use the same technical design as the new iPod touch, with A8/M8 and 4-inch screen. That would be an appropriate progression for iPhone 5C and efficient use of the same engineering work for two iOS devices. And it gives customers who want a smaller iPhone a new choice while letting Apple reserve the “latest and greatest” specs for the flagship.

  2. I have to admit, when I first saw the 6 plus I thought – wow, way too big for a phone. But having just visited an Apple Store and looked at it again, then tried it in my pocket, which I hadn’t before, I thought – hey, it still fits just nice, and I like the bigger screen.

My next upgrade from a 5s is in 5 months time, so with a trade in to O2 here in UK, this will pay for the extra purchase charge. O2 give very generous trade in prices. I’ve changed my mind and will go for the 6 plus. At 72 (today) my eyesight isn’t as good, so the larger screen/text will be just fine. Can’t wait.

    1. My problem isn’t pockets – it’s holding it in my hand. I’ve been into the Apple Store several times to try them on, and every time I hold the 6 Plus in my hand, it’s gigantic; so big intact, that I can barely hold it one hand let alone use it.

BTW, I’m 6’3″ with size 13 shoes, so my hands are comparably large. I’d love the battery life and optical image stabilization in the 6 Plus, and screen is nice being that big, but the phone is just too damn big. Crossing my fingers the smaller 6s will have the better camera so I can upgrade from iPhone 5. I’m waiting.
