“Microsoft plans to announce a major new round of layoffs as early as Wednesday, as the company seeks to further cut costs in a shifting technology landscape,” Nick Wingfield reports for The New York Times.
“The layoffs are in addition to the about 18,000 employees that Microsoft said it planned to let go a year ago, according to people briefed on the plans, who asked for anonymity because the details were confidential,” Wingfield reports. “The new job cuts are expected to affect people in Microsoft’s hardware group, among other parts of the company, including the struggling smartphone business… At the end of March, Microsoft had more than 118,000 employees globally.”
“Microsoft is not expected to leave the smartphone business in the near term, given the importance of mobile devices in the technology business,” Wingfield reports. “Still, analysts have said Microsoft may soon acknowledge missteps in the smartphone business with a large write-down of the value of its Nokia acquisition. The announcement of that accounting charge, which could amount to several billion dollars, is expected by many to occur before Microsoft reports earnings this month.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is what failure looks like.
For miring the world in a long Dark Age of Personal Computing, we have negligible sympathy. Still, good luck to those affected non-executive level employees. May you quickly find employment with a competent tech firm that doesn’t litter the world with crap that frustrates the living hell out of hapless users. To the executives responsible for this abject failure, beaten senseless by Steve Jobs and Co., go work at a floor wax company or something where you can’t cause so much damage.
May an outfit as horrid as Microsoft NEVER come to dominate the hoi polloi’s computing experiences EVER AGAIN! May a cloistered group of clueless IT Doofuses NEVER have the power to hamper worldwide productivity by forcing such frustrating garbage on workers EVER AGAIN!

Yes Microsoft sucks but it is never good to see this many people lose their jobs.

Steve Jobs’ Apple did this to Microsoft. Vanquished the Borg! Don’t get all weak-kneed and wishy-washy now, as victory is upon us!
Savor the victory.
The competent MSFT employees will find gainful employment elsewhere (unless Obama’s and the RINO’s cheap foreign labor takes it from them first). In that case, enjoy your government welfare (while it lasts), Microsofties. You didn’t earn it.
Oh, please.

All jokes aside. All movies aside. All books aside.
What really happened is exactly what Jobs said Apple was doing starting at about 1:20 in the first video. Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world because of it. We are better for that.
My iPod was a music player as it should be. Not like my Archos.
My iPhone is a phone as it should be. Not like my RAZR.
My iPad is a tablet as it should be. No other tablet was worth consideration.
My iMac is a computer as it should be. The two dozen or so before it aren’t even worth talking about.
My Apple TV is a nice little box that does what it should. It shames the Comcast box it sits on top of.
My Apple Watch is a “wearable” as it should be. No other one was even worth 5 minutes of consideration.
Why did all this happen?
unimaginative planning and greed
I love it when MDN quotes me!
So proud that you both plagiarized.
Incoherent blethering noted.
You need an ENEMA to clean that stink out. lol
I’m already hearing rumors that there will be no Surface Pro 4 – in fact they are considering discontinuing the line altogether. So much for the bullcrap about great sales of this waste of space “tablet that replaces your laptop”.
Just announced on CNN – MS cuts 7,800 jobs in their mobile phone business. Sorry to see people lose their jobs, but their employer doesn’t know sh*t about that market.
MS announces layoffs and there shares are up this morning, so is gaggles. A bunch of “news” outlets pick up the slice article and AAPL is down 1.38%. Is this a Max Pain week?
Love reading all the fanboi comments but just a friendly heads up. You could be contravening the clean air act If you continue to blow that much smoke each other’s a$$es.
But you come to a “fanboi” site, talk about blowing smoke.
One hour later the numbers are out.
Nokia was a Ballmer thing. It was a mistake, like most Ballmer things were. MS will take a huge writedown on it as they get out from under that boondoggle.
I don’t envy Satya Nadella’s job at all. Unraveling Ballmer’s f-ups is a full-time job for anyone and I actually think he’s doing a fairly decent job at repairing the damage.
