“With iOS 9 due out in public beta next month and to the general public this fall, Apple continues refining the appearance and behavior of the software that powers the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad,” Michael deAgonia writes for Computerworld. “And just as it’s doing with OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Apple is adding a variety of under-the-hood improvements and new tricks that focus on proactivity, UI refinements, and best of all, stability and performance.”
“Perhaps one of the most useful search-related features is the one found to the left of the Home Screen,” deAgonia writes. “When you swipe to the right from the home screen, you’ll see a pre-populated list of information iOS 9 thinks is important to you: recent contacts, recent apps, suggestions to find nearby locations like gas stations, theaters and bars, and some of the latest headlines, based on trending local news.”
“When using guidance in Maps — tell Siri to take you to work, for instance — iOS 9 will prompt you when to leave based on current traffic, and then volunteer traffic updates along the way, as well as alternative routes around traffic any tie-ups ahead,” deAgonia writes. “(That’ll come in handy when Siri suddenly announces that there’s traffic two miles ahead due to an accident and suggests ways around it.)”

MacDailyNews Take: We’re looking forward to iOS 9 this fall (beta 2 is still too wonky for everyday use, so, non-developers, do not install on your primary iOS devices), but iOS 8.4 with Apple Music is what we’re looking forward to first. Four days to go!
I’m looking forward to the new Maps app. It would be nice to ditch Waze. Waze works for the most part, but I hate the pop-up ads, and I don’t like how cluttered it becomes with reports from users. There should be a better way to show problems without cluttering up the app so much I can’t even see the roads on the map!
I ditched Waze a few days after installing it. Like you, I could not stand all those ads…and it’s cluttered with all these reports from users. I just gave up after that.
So, I don’t get it, what’s wrong with the current Apple Maps? I’ve been using since day 1, never looked back, never had any issues with it. What does Waze do that AM doesn’t? I used Waze before AM, but not since. Just curious.
Was currently does better with traffic reports. I would prefer to use Maps, but it has proven to not be as good about warning me about traffic. I really don’t need navigation so much since I know my way around Dallas/Fort Worth really well. I just want to avoid traffic jams.
Apple Maps is still lacking in showing traffic density. In many cities it only shows major roads and highways, not (enough of) the secondary ones that I want to use to route around them.
Apple Maps doesn’t have much places, infos and roads. My place is still black and white satellite photos. Also the pronunciation of places and roads are all wrong. I have no choice but to use Waze and Google Maps because of these problems.
So the iPod Touch isn’t EOL? That would be kewl.
I disagree with the Mac daily news take on iOS 9. There are minor issues but nothing that keeps me from using my devices normally. In fact… it’s more stable than iOS 8 ever was.
There was alot of talk of battery life being bad, but that was in iOS 9 beta 1. Not sure about beta 2. I am upgrading to 10.11 beta 2 right now on my laptop, but can’t do iOS 9 yet because I need access to work email and Airwatch isn’t working with iOS9 yet. My laptop I can deal with the bugs and issues and I’m always giving feedback so its best I use it on my daily machine. But I don’t recommend anyone else do that and install beta on primary machines.
