Study: High iPhone 6/Plus resale values suggests strong demand

“Investment bank Piper Jaffray recently studied iPhone resales on eBay in the U.S. and found iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units going for 72 percent of their original retail value some nine months after launch,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider. “By contrast, iPhone 5s and 5c sold at a respective 65 percent and 53 percent of retail during the same window last year.”

“A similar trend was discovered in China, where iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models on sale through online shopping site Taobao went for 73 percent of new retail value eight months after launch,” Campbell reports. “Those statistics compare to 65 percent and 53 percent for iPhone 5s and 5c over the same period, respectively.”

Campbell reports, “In a note to investors, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster cautioned that extrapolating iPhone demand from resale value is ‘not a perfect science,’ but said the results are an encouraging sign of healthy demand.”

MacDailyNews Take: With roughly only 20%-25% penetration iPhone 6/Plus and their successors have much room to run.

  1. I have to say this again, I was one of those who, until last October, continued to believe that the demand for 5″ and larger screens was not genuine and that Apple will still see a strong preference for the iPhone 5-sized display. I was convinced that any market share Samsung gained there was from curious users who quickly understood their mistake and would soon after get a smaller screen.

It is quite clear that I was wrong. Large screen (iPhone 6 and larger) seem to have plenty of fans to expand iPhone’s market share at the expense of Samsung.

There were many like me who were convinced that Steve was right; that a large phone was a brick, unwieldy, battery hog, difficult to put in pocket, unnecessary… Well, iPhone 6 clearly showed we were wrong. While I would honestly hope Apple would consider making a proper successor to iPhone 5S (I know of plenty of people who aren’t quite happy with the size of the 6 and would have loved to have its technology in a 5S size), when the moment comes for me to turn in my 5S (which will be when Discover card makes a deal with Apple for ApplePay), I will likely get the 6 (or whichever successor comes in the fall after it) and learn to live with the larger size.

      1. Yep, I love when the true Apple fan can be real and admit that their opinion was misguided, or the Apple missed on a design/biz choice. Predrag–thx for the former. I wondered about the 6’s too.
Just say “no” to Apple fanboism.

        1. I wear cotton flannel shirts with double breasted button down flap pockets. 6 Plus is too tall for those pockets right? Been carrying my iPhones in the left breast pocket for years. Found a tailor-seamstress who extended all my left pocket button down flaps up 1.5 inches for only $5 each. She added matching colored material to each flap and moved them all up 1.5 inches so my iPhone 6 Plus fits covered by the larger flap and still buttons down securely.

Meanwhile my 42mm SG WATCH SPORT fills in for the good old days when I’d have to unbutton and pull out my iPhone 6 Plus more often than now.😃

    1. I have a 5S and a 6Plus and the 5S remains my daily driver purely down to it fitting better in my pocket while I’m working. Love the 6 Plus, but for me it’s just a bit too big to pocket comfortably and still be able to do my work.

  2. I’d simply thought it was wise for Apple to offer a few different display sizes to satisfy a greater number of consumers although I also thought there would be less users of larger display smartphones. However, I do understand that if consumers don’t have a smartphone and a tablet they may decide to get a larger smartphone to take the place of not having a tablet.

I’m sure Apple must have gone over a few scenarios but there was still the argument of Apple claiming larger displays weren’t up to their standards. I think we may not know the real story of why Apple chose not to go to larger display smartphones sooner. If Apple made a mistake in judgment it would seem they’ve made up for it. No company is perfect and if Apple has learned from its mistakes then that’s a good thing.

  3. I’m struggling to understand why any iPhone 6 / 6 plus units would be up for resale. If there were a shortage and you could get more than retail in certain markets I could understand. But right now this this is a mystery to me.
