Chevy’s first Carplay-enabled cars arrive

“Chevy announced earlier this year it would be bringing Apple’s CarPlay to production vehicles this year, and now those first cars with the infotainment feature from Apple are rolling off the line and going out to dealerships and consumers,” Darrell Etherington reports for TechCrunch. “The very first production Chevrolet with CarPlay installed was the silver, 650-HP Corvette Z06.”

“So far, rollout of new vehicles with the software actually enabled for end-users have been slow (the Ferrari FF is the only confirmed one so far), but Chevrolet’s production shipments represent the beginning of what’s likely to become a widespread trend,” Etherington reports. “The iPhone maker already revealed at WWDC this year that it will be adding dynamic support from different display sizes and aspect rations, and that auto makers will be able to create their own CarPlay apps to control in-cabin functions like AC.”

      You know your Vette’s. Spark, I won’t take anything away for the 63 (split window I assume or convert) super stylish but the ’57 & ’67 pretty much strictly made for racing. You might get close to 3 sec in a ’67 with a rolling start.

      Seriously though, I have to admit this new one is sick. The Shark Grey hard top with black accents totally looks like the Bat Mobile.

      While I am a fan of the Vette’s and Trucks, I too wish taxpayer dollars would not have been used. Personally I favored breaking up the company. Those models would have survived just fine.

      1. That’s an illusion. Those popular models weren’t made independently. They were a part of big Chevrolet network of suppliers, which would all go out of business without the carmaker to buy their parts. One or two model lines can in no way support the huge network of suppliers that provided parts for the whole line.

        Letting GM fail would have practically destroyed auto industry in America. At the time when almost 20 million Americans were jobless, this would have added another five million to that number.

    Bailed Out Government Motors- biggest mistake Obama made. They should have beautified America’s roads by letting Crapolet and Crapillac go to liquidation.

    The myth that all was paid back is an accounting trick. Between Delphi, GMAC, the “New GM” and the liquidation of the Old GM we got hosed.

    1. Well, not quite. The TARP money was returned with interest five years before deadline.

      As for the stocks of the “new” GM owned by the government, that was sold at a loss. On investment of about $50B, the government got a return of some $41B. Had they waited two more years to sell, they would have made profit on the investment, as the GM stock had grown since the sale of the last batch.

      The bottom line is that the taxpayers no longer own any part of GM, except for those who individually bought shares.

      1. Between the underfunded Pensions, bailing out GMAC- now ally bank and the collapse of Delphi- formerly GM Parts (AC/Delco) we are on the hook. The payback was and is a lie and GM reneged on it’s agreement to dispose of Vauxhall/Opel (GM Europe).

        Funny thing is all theses southerners driving around in Dodge Chargers and Chevrolet Trucks- Obamamobiles.

        1. You keep saying ‘payback is a lie’, but it doesn’t make it any less incorrect.

          The money GM received from TARP was never used and was simply returned. While some of those who opposed the bailout didn’t like the fact that the money didn’t come from new GM’s profits, the fact remains that the money never left the escrow in which it was sitting.

          And government sold last GM shares long ago. None of those Dodge Charges or Chevy trucks that those southerners are supposedly driving are Obamamobiles — GM is fully in the hands of individual (and institutional) share holders, and no part of it belongs to the government anymore.

        2. GM dumped it’s unfunded pension liabilities upon the US taxpayer along with that of Delphi- it spun off former parts subsidiary. That amount dwarfed the money paid pack by the “New” GM after the structured bankruptcy.

          Believe the BS if you want- GM cost taxpayers a massive amount that will never be recovered. All GMs & Chryslers are Obamamobiles.

        3. You could also call them Bushmobiles, since it was Bush who approved the bailout and started the process.

          The total loss the US government incurred in the GM bailout was about 20% of some $50B that was put in (i.e. around $11B). The net result is that about 1,2 million jobs (that pay taxes) were saved, and some $35B in various taxable revenue was preserved. One could argue that the government in the end got a pretty good deal out of it.

  2. Since Ford first said that it was going to drop their partnership with Microsoft with Sync I, looked into it more. The Gen 1 Sync was ok and ran well ( I have have a car with it ), but the Gen 2 had voice recognition bugs ( I have a car with it too ). They both work great with the iPhone. Now the Sync 3 there was talk that Ford turned to Apple to get some ideas for the Synch 3. That is why on the main screen there is a button that says Siri. You can access her directly and through the USB connection her voice will come up and you can speak with her directly. They also want Sync 3 to be more integrated with the iPhone because Ford believed that most of their car buyers has iPhones. It is not CarPlay, but for now it is the closest thing. It will come out on the 2016 models of the Escape, Fiesta and the new Focus RS. The al so said that down the road ( they did not say when ) that they will add support for CarPlay and, unfortunately, The Google junk.
