Rush Limbaugh: Apple needs to hire Matt Drudge to run their News app

Among other things during his radio program, Mac, iPhone, and iPad user Rush Limbaugh on Fridayy discussed his Apple’s forthcoming News app which will come free to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users with the public release of iOS 9.

The 3-hour Rush Limbaugh Show, the highest-rated, most-listened-to talk-radio program in the United States with some 15 million weekly listeners, airs daily on a network of approximately 590 AM and FM affiliate radio stations. The program is also broadcast worldwide on the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Network.

From the live on-air transcript:

Apple has a new app coming on their iOS devices, the iPhone and the iPad, and it’s called News. Have you ever heard of the app Flipboard? (interruption) You never have. Well, Flipboard is a news app, and they have any number of them. And they create magazine-looking news stories based on the usual suspects: ABC, NBC, NBC, the tech blogs. So it’s just a different way of getting your news in one place. Well, Apple announced they’re gonna do their own news app.

When I saw this I said, “They need to hire Matt Drudge,” because their news app is an aggregator. Flipboard is an aggregator. It’s one place you go to read the latest from the Washington Post, the New Yorker. You can select the sources that you want at Flipboard or Zune or any of these other apps, I think there’s two or three of them. Apple is gonna do their own.

They are actually going to hire human beings to put together this news app every day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365. They have posted ads for journalists and the requirements are, certain degree, certain level of degree, education, from accredited J-schools. It’s just gonna be the New York Times all over again. It’s gonna be, pick your poison. It’s gonna be left-wing news. It’s gonna be standard, ordinary, mainstream, whatever you want to call it, Drive-By Media. It’s gonna be curated by human beings, put together by human beings, and they’re gonna hire journalists, which, Apple’s culture is liberal, too, so you know what it’s gonna be.

Apple does everything differently. Apple stands out. What is the most successful news website in America, by far? It’s the Drudge Report. The Drudge Report has more page views, the Drudge Report has more clicks, the Drudge Report has more people looking at it every day than any other single website. Bigger than the New York Times, bigger than the Washington Post… If you look at the Drudge page, it’s everything. It’s not left-wing. It’s not right-wing, but it’s clearly different. There’s nothing else like it. And isn’t it fascinating that after 27 years the people in journalism, nobody has been able to create a competitor website that comes anywhere close.

And yet what is it? It’s just a guy scouring as much as he can on the Web and choosing to link to stories that interest him. It’s essentially what it is. And when I heard about Apple’s news app, the Drudge Report, they ought to buy the Drudge Report and bring Drudge in and make him one of their employees. It’d be the most popular, it would just kill, it would be different. And they’re not gonna do it. It’s gonna end up — I mean, they can highly tout this all they want, but it’s gonna be a reflection of the people they hire. And they’re gonna hire the same people that CNN would hire or the New York Times would hire.

Everywhere you go, it’s identical. And that is what gives it authority, that no matter where you go, a story on Hillary Clinton’s gonna be the same thing: Hillary’s great, the Republicans criticizing her are screwballs, extremists, oddballs, weirdos. Or Trump is a clown, you name it, it’s gonna be the same no matter where you go. But Apple does things differently, and the Drudge page, I mean, if they want a news app that nobody else has got that’s gonna get clicks, it’s just waiting to happen. And they won’t even think of it.

MacDailyNews Take: Matt Drudge running Apple’s New app would certainly be interesting, don’t you think?

Apple entering the news curation business is certainly a many-faceted affair.

    1. There will come a time when Apple gets so large and tone deaf that it will jump the shark and start its decline. Having Dredge on the masthead of News would be a sure sign of the arrival of that time.

        1. What headlines do people prefer…banal, McPaper style, or ones that draw you in?

I don’t see much dishonesty on Drudge. It’s seriously the quickest way to get caught up on news. (And yes, it links to all your favorite liberal articles too)

        2. Agreed. However, you need to mentor the CEO/COOs of ALL American based news services and broadcasters. They’re failing miserably when compared to your standard! I’ll call the “childish games” you mentioned as “being in the hip pocket of the government”. I take what the government and news media makes public over the airwaves with a grain of salt. Bad thing is that for the past 15 years that grain of salt is growing larger by the week!

        3. All journals have an agenda. Inherent bias. I am not arguing he has no bias.

Hmm, maybe Siri is the perfect editor for you. Enjoy that magazine, doofus.

  1. The only way to make people happy is to set up the Apple news service just like iTunes is set up. For example, you can choose between liberal, conservative, or whatever news you want to read.

You could have the Kardashian channel for all worthless “people” news. The liberal, or should I say “progressive,” channel will have NY Times and Huffington post articles. Drudge and WSJ articles could be the mainstay of the conservative channel. And Zero Hedge and the other alternative media could be the tin-foil-hat network.

There, everyone would be happy and no one would need to read anything they didn’t agree with. Sounds like the perfect solution in today’s America.

    1. The “news” today is mostly an exercise in entertainment when it is being benign, and a tool for propaganda and persuasion when its intent is toxic and polarizing. That effect is almost inevitable when you parse and silo the news into categories for happy consumption.

There was a time when America got its news from sober, objective journalists who took pride in their factual, objective reporting of the real news, both domestic and international. It is no coincidence that many of these men (yeah, they were nearly all males) had covered the news from the battlefields of WWII and the Korean War (and even the Vietnam War) with a helmet on their head and often mud, and occasionally blood, on their uniforms. These men were respected and trusted, and their reportage made it possible for this country to be a leader in many human endeavors because an informed citizenry is the foundation of a successful democracy.

I hope the Apple news service delivers reportage on what I need to know, not what makes me happy.

    2. Conservative news versus liberal news? What a concept. Maybe I’m just too old, but I remember when the avoidance of any sort of bias was the cardinal rule of journalism.

Wackos like Limbaugh, Riley and others are a blight on society. There has never been such domination of the media and poisoning of the minds by right wing extremists since the days of Josef Goebbels. They use fear, suspicion, anger and hate to promote extremism. They mix truth with innuendo and lies, knowing that the soap opera style drama will have such a sway that viewers will never look elsewhere to verify what they are told.
This has created a polarized society and has undermined the basic principles of reason, common sense, and cooperation that are among the bedrock principles of the Constitution.
People who have grown up with this extremism actually believe that this is normal. For those of us who have been around for a long time and who have seen the steady degeneration of news media over the years, this is an America that is almost unrecognizable from the America of 40 years ago.

    1. Your are probably right, as far them not wanting to publish conservative ideas. If that is right than they shouldn’t have to spend much money on this, they can just follow any of the mainstream media outlets. If however they are interested in objective news and not left wing democratic party propaganda,
then they would probably have to include stories identified by Limbaugh, WSJ, Fox news and Drudge.

      1. ‘Objective news’?!? Take the time to fact-check some of the stuff coming from Fox, Drudge, Limbaugh and the likes. You’ll find a fairly poor track record for reporting the truth.

        1. All Drudge does is post links from other news sites. He rarely writes anything.
So if you have a problem, take it up with the site that wrote the article.

        2. You’re an idiot.

          Drudge merely posts links.

If you were truly concerned about facts, you’d have mentioned the awfulness of CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, NYT, so on and so forth.

Yes, Fox has problems, but not nearly as many as the ones listed above.

        3. Fox was the only news outlet that got the Benghazi story right. The others were just parroting the White House lies about the Internet video.
CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC and the NYT are merely the steno pool for the Democratic Party.

        4. But Bill is correct about Fox and Limbaugh. They are no more fair and balanced that the “main stream media” sources that you despise. Fox and Rush are just biased in the opposite direction.

The post above nailed it – most people just want their own views regurgitated to them. It makes them feel warm and fuzzy to have their egos stroked and never to have to worry about having their viewpoints challenged. After all, who in the a United States actually wants to think, to debate, to re-evaluate their own opinions and positions?

        5. it is only human nature to form beliefs based on your upbringing, to want to defend them in the face of overpowering odds, and stick to them to the bitter end. The alternative is called learning and adaptation, but one’s lip curls, and hackles rise, at the merest hint of reasonable accommodation, seeing no difference between that and betrayal of one’s kin and oneself. Why not just issue everyone sharp knives and get it all over with.

  2. This is hilarious. Excellent troll by Limbaugh. I’m sure Apple will get onto hiring Drudge, right after they finish signing Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Governor Mike Huckabee too.

  3. GOD BLESS Rush Limbaugh and Matt Drudge! The only real men in the world that have the guts to speak what’s right and true! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH! And GOD BLESS MDN for keeping us up to date with everything RUSH has to say! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

  4. At the risk of sounding self aggrandizing (who cares, there’s a bunch of that on here)

I have a very strong hunch that Rush saw my comment of the same (“If they hired Matt Drudge to curate the articles, everybody would read it.”) on this very blog on the previous day of his article.

Also, I will say that Kaplan (I forget his handle) made a comment that totally rejected the idea, suggesting that I was suggesting Drudge is middle of the road. No. My point is readership would be huge, because Drudge is the proven champion of news aggregation, media….which many people have no clue about.

    1. Aggregators without an identifiable political bias…that’s a dream that maybe Apple is reaching for. But what’s the business model? Selling news to people that want fair and balanced reporting? How has that ever worked? It hasn’t. It can’t. You won’t hold a broad or diverse market. People claim they seek balance but that’s self-delusion. Instead they devour information that affirms their already-held beliefs, passed down by their kith and kin, their in-groups. They have favorite channels and stick to them. Actual seekers after knowledge are considered rebels, pariahs, witches to be burned, threats to our perceived natural order. Truth is not the basis of journalism any more than it is of religion. Social adhesion is.

    2. There’s a reason for Drudge’s success as a news aggregator, that’s also partially responsible for Google’s success as a search engine: their pages load almost instantly, on any device, on any connection. Their design- and code-simplicity drew people in, and most liked it enough to keep it a habit.

Now Google is about to run the planet and Drudge is “considered” the most powerful Internet news site. All because their sites loaded more quickly on dial-up. Incredible. It’s the law of unintended consequences writ large.

By the way, I just checked on alexa.com — which ranks top internet sites by unique monthly visitors — and Drudgereport.com is only #25 among NEWS websites in the US. (And 146 overall)

  5. Online news has devolved into what news USED to be back in the days when tabloids were making a lot of money. It’s all fueled primarily by adrenaline. We can call it “click bait” or whatever term you like but it’s essentially appealing to the lowest common denominator in order to get the most attention. This was always the case of course and the sex, violence, and lurid offerings always were and always will be the ones that draw the most views. There’s no differentiation in terms of WHO the audience is…it’s all just eyeballs to advertisers. So..the core idea of hiring Drudge is a good one from a pure volume standpoint. But the old saw that all journalists are liberal and all biased against a conservative view point is prejudice of the worst sort. You can find bias in almost any news report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer to the Manchester Guardian.. it’s largely a matter of perspective. Apple will VERY likely (and wisely) incorporate people who have a more conservative perspective to curate much of the content since they are about serving a wide audience. Let’s wait and see.
