“While Apple Maps is currently restricted to dedicated apps on iOS and OS X, that will change, as a new job listing from Apple reveals the company plans to make its mapping service available cross-platform on the Web,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.
“Apple’s future plans were revealed in an advertisement seeking a ‘Maps JavaScript Engineer’ posted by the company in the last month,” Hughes reports. “The full-time position based at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters seeks a Web technology expert ‘to help make maps work seamlessly on the web.'”
Hughes reports, “The Web development position requires ‘deep knowledge’ of JavaScript, as Apple unsurprisingly plans for its Web-based Maps service to be a “‘cross-platform’ solution.”

MacDailyNews Take: Very interesting. Apple seems to be showing some confidence in their Maps abilities – and right so, the app is much improved; it exited what should have been labeled its “beta” period quite some time ago. Also, the more people using Maps, the more data and corrections, so Maps should become even more accurate as it’s opened up to the world.

I really like the interface on Maps, but prefer others for accuracy and completeness. This is a good sign.
I agree with you. Google Maps new ‘Material Design’ interface makes it far more difficult to use than Apple Maps. Too many hidden features and “where the fuck do I swipe/click” moments in the new Google Maps.
But Google Maps usually has more complete and accurate turn-by-turn directions than Apple Maps. Apple Maps still has some embarrassing glitches, like calling the southbound side of the freeway “north” and the northbound side “south”. Hopefully they’ll get this stuff ironed out this year, as apparently they’re switching over to their own in-house database instead of relying on the 3rd party frankenstein’s monster that provides the current back-end of Maps.

I hope you reported that. Apple’s Maps group has become pretty good at fixing bad data.
When they add mass transit, call me and the huge majority of NYC and other metropolitan area users.
Until then, I’m stuck with Google Maps, a shadow of the simple and effective tool it once was.
