“Steve Wozniak reaffirmed his staunch support for digital privacy in an interview over the weekend in which the Apple co-founder called National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden ‘a hero,'” Tom Huddleston reports for Fortune.
“Over the weekend, Wozniak reiterated his admiration for Snowden in an interview with ArabianBusiness.com in which the inventor said Snowden ‘gave up his own life… to help the rest of us,'” Huddleston reports. “Wozniak went on to tell the publication more on his feelings about Snowden: ‘Total hero to me; total hero,’ he gushes. ‘Not necessarily [for] what he exposed, but the fact that he internally came from his own heart, his own belief in the United States Constitution, what democracy and freedom was about. And now a federal judge has said that NSA data collection was unconstitutional.'”

Why does it seem there are always some with no conscience about treading on other people’s freedom, our country and the U.S. Constitution? What is it they do not understand?
I understand security is important but then the Ben Franklin quote springs to mind: “Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
Ah, ANOTHER use of a quote that doesn’t mean what people think it means. But don’t let that stop us.
Funny how you just can’t trust a plainly spoken quote from a Founding Father. You’re right but even in the context most people understand it as tradeoffs it seems reasonable and true even if not Franklin’s exact intent (having more to do with the governor and Assembly of Pennsylvania at the time).
http://www.lawfareblog.com/2011/07/what-ben-franklin-really-said/
Not a matter of trust. Just oh-so-tired of misuse of that quote. Sure, it sounds great, but it doesn’t mean what you want it to mean.
But is is a reasonable use of the quote to what we DO want it to mean, even if not Franklin’s original intent. Which is no doubt why it gets used so often. There is a truism in it regardless.
He is a trader!
Why, does he own a pawn shop?
Nah, just dabbles in the stock market a bit…
Country shopping.
On the contrary, he is a true patriot.
Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Even when the government overreaches itself, it gives no one the right to put others at risk with an ill-conceived so-called “correction” of the problem – especially one that doesn’t correct the problem.
Woz, like anyone, has his areas of expertise. This isn’t one of them.
Without Snowden, none of us would have been aware that a correction was needed. NSA wasn’t going to voluntarily admit they were using the Constitution as toilet paper.
Why is it you liberals don’t seem to mind when Obama uses the Constitution in the same manner?
Such oversimplification of the issue is mind-boggling! Such ‘hero-ification’ of Snowden is just as mind-boggling.
Snowden was appalled that the US had a surveillance system in place that the US public did not know about and was being actively hidden from not only the public but our elected representatives.
He completely fixed THAT problem. Now we can have a public debate.
But apparently you see no value in being informed of the problem unless Snowden singlehandedly stops all the surveillance himself.
Your lack of appreciation for what someone HAS done for you at great sacrifice, because they haven’t done EVERYTHING for you is like expecting political welfare.
If Snowden, who had a high security clearance, was ‘appalled’ that the US had a ‘secret’ surveillance system then he must have been an idiot. And no, he didn’t ‘fix’ anything. If he did he wouldn’t currently be living in RUSSIA, a country notorious for spying on its own citizens.
The right wing has declared Snowden a traitor. He’s not, but they don’t let truth get in their way. Congratulations to Woz for seeing the depth of the issue and standing for principal and not letting my team vs. your team politics get in the way.
Not all “right wing”er’s think he is a traitor.
I’m a conservative, not a republican or “right wing”, and I think Snowden did the right thing as a whistle blower.
That being said, anything that Snowden knew or might have known x number of years ago is probably just a sliver of what is happening now. It’s probably far worse then we can even imagine.
It is NOT a left wing/right wing issue. It is a Freedom Issue. And remember, Snowden left under this administration’s work. If you want to throw stones, throw them at politicians equally. We used to be able to disagree peacefully and party together. Now it is “divide and hate”, . . . and we are seeing the result of this on this forum.
The Future of surveillance is: The idea of a police state by bringing local police under federal guidelines and control – which is as threatening as unabridged phone surveillance.
Throw them at the Obama administration, too, because its record against (yes, against) whistle-blowers is the worst in US history.
Snowden was no ‘whistle-blower’. Whistle-blowers don’t steal classified documents they swore to protect and flee the country. To Russia, for Christ’s sake!
He is most definitely a traitor. At worst he is a criminal and a fugitive. What he did is not whistleblowing, it was divulging classified information that your elected officials knew everything about supported. I hope he finds his way back soon–he should be tried in a court of law.
Tried in a ‘court of la’ that you have already found him guilty in?
You and your type are diabolical stooges who would believe anything that came from a politician believing yourself to be some kind of patriot. But we know you are really an unthinking stupid idiot.
Every word in your pathetic diatribe points to YOU being an unthinking stupid idiot.
You don’t know me at all, Paul, which goes to show that you are the idiot to make such sweeping judgment on me. We know a lot about Snowden. We certainly know he stole classified information. He is a traitor and should be tried for his crimes. I am not saying he wouldn’t get off, or that the great Left of this country wouldn’t have great sympathy for him. Bring him home and try him in a court of law. Seriously, though, Paul, step off the personal attacks on me. Those are setting the foundation demonstrating your weakness.
This is a very complex issue, not best served on MDN.
Oh, well, then I’m sure the basically brain-dead nincompoops in the Senate will tackle this issue with resolve and brio.
Right.
So those are our only two options? MDN or the Senate?
And of course it goes without saying, at least to the citizen’s of the free and civilized world that we know who the total evil and amoral villain is.
That karma is going to be such a bitch.
Some music to put us in the mood.
I’m tempted to link to ‘Burn Down The Mission’ by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
Everybody now bring your family down to the riverside
Look to the east to see where the fat stock hide
Behind four walls of stone the rich man sleeps
It’s time we put the flame torch to their keep.
Burn down the mission
If we’re gonna stay alive
Watch the black smoke fly to heaven
See the red flame light the sky
Neo-Feudalism is here.
He’s a hero in my book as well.
The truth has been in plain sight for quite a while.
Me too Woz. Friends and I are taking bets as to when the USA wakes-the-hell-up and erects a statue in appreciation for the altruistic sacrifices Edward Snowden has made for his country.
I can’t wait for the traitorous witch hunt and burning. (Sort of kidding).
