“Apple’s new Photos app for Mac computers, available Wednesday as a free software update, makes it easy to organize and edit your pictures,” Anick Jesdanun reports for The Associated Press. “The app, which replaces iPhoto, bundles professional-level tools such as granular color correction into one free consumer package.”
“Photos is good for auto-enhancing, cropping and other basic touches such as lightening underexposed shots. But it goes further by also including some of the advanced fine-tuning you’d find in a tool like Adobe Lightroom, which costs $149,” Jesdanun reports. “With a new iCloud Photo Library online-storage service, all your mobile photos will sync to the Mac app, along with your iPhoto albums… By storing full-resolution images online, Photos can free up space on your Mac or mobile device by substituting a lower-quality version. You can still get the original whenever you need it, but it’s not taking up room if you don’t. Photos figures all that out for you and takes into account how much space you have.”

Love the new Photos App. iPhoto was great in its time, but really needed an overhaul. This new Photo App is so much faster, intuitive and has future updates going for it.
I’ve been using Photos in the beta release for a few weeks. I have 20,000 photos in my main album and approximately 20 additional smaller albums which I’ve been managing with iPhoto Buddy. This won’t work the same way with Photos and I’m not sure what the developer of iPhoto Buddy will do. But I do like Photos, so I wouldn’t worry about “losing control.” It’s optional whether or not to put your photos into iCloud. You can keep them locally. And right now the cost is kind of high. I can buy a hard drive and a backup drive for NAS of my photos for not much more than I would pay for a year of storage. I won’t have access to my entire library on my iPhone, but I don’t really care about that. I want to access it from either of the two iMacs in my network.

I hear that Events disappear and are replaced by something called albums. Can I still view them in date order like now?
Been using the Public beta and it’s great so far, apart from a small issue with albums in a browser it’s been a pretty awesome introduction to this new App.
I remember back in 1997 when I worked in the newspaper industry OPIs were essential because networks and computers weren’t fast enough to work with hi-res images. Now I can see this is an adaption of the OPI and I think it’s a great idea.

Still annoyed they’ve replaced the 5-star rating system in Photos with a “Favourite” toggle.
Will the new photos app import old photobooks from iPhotos? Need to keep some old photobooks saved so can get more printed.
Not sure, but you can try. Since the import is non-destructive, if it doesn’t work, keep your copy of iPhoto with the books in there.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time over the past decade compiling photos from various sources (usually different cameras or iOS devices) in to “Events”. My photo collection is too big for me to have entrusted the beta of Photo so I don’t know from first-hand experience, but I’ve been told that “Events” will pull forward in to the new Photo, but they’ll be folders labelled as the prior Events. Can any of the beta users of iPhoto confirm that this is the case and otherwise elaborate on how Events are handled in Photo? Also, can I combine pics in to Events going forward with Photo like I’ve done for the past decade in iPhoto?

All good questions. I’ve been around the web and found that you cannot mouse-over albums to see what is inside. Star ratings are gone and there is no location setting. Automator actions are gone. Presumably FlickrExport will not work.
I’d like to know if iPhoto is still available after installing 10.10.3.

My computer weirds out (graphically speaking) when using Pixelmator in Yosemite beta. Has anyone else seen a similar issue? I have made notice of it while evaluating the beta though I am worried that Apple isn’t going to do anything about it.
I downloaded 10.10.3 and had it remake my personal picture set (12k). I had about 30 Albums (folders) dividing pictures into different groups that I had printed to put into scrapbooks.
Those Albums are now gone, so it will be very hard to figure out which photos go in the next scrapbook.
Is there any way to get the original Album divisions back?
